William Thomas LEHEW

                      In 1900 census with his parents ,also in 1900 census with father and son in Clayton Co. as boarders with Robert Yeager.  1920 census shows him with wife and children in Clayton Co.  Iowa in Mc.Gregor.   A Clayton co. History gives this info.  Rachel Ellen Douglass was b. Oct.19 1878,in McGregor,Clayton Co.  Her parents were George Sidway Douglass(1840-1930) and Juliette Rachel Cartwright Watts Douglass(1848-1933).  There were eight children; Homer Edmund b.1875,d.1969;Rachel Ellen b. 1878,d.1976; Earl edward b. 1884; Ethel Mard b. 1882; Albert (twin) b. 1880;  Arthur (twin) b. 1880;  Dorothy b. 1891 d. 1979; and Ervie b. 1887,d. 1979.  Rachel attended school in McGregor and after high school worked at the J.F. Widman printing. office for the North Iowa Times until her marriage to Orley James LeHew, son of Thomas and Rebecca Crogan leHew, monona,Ia., Oct.30 1902.  The wedding took place in Rachel's home in McGregor with the Rev. D.C. dutton officiating.  They were the parents of 11 children, 2 of which died in infancy: Vera lorraine b. 1903 d. 1903 age 6 wks; Noble Byard b. 1904 d. 1980 m. Frances Brill; Hattie Mae b. 1906,m. George David m.2. Duane Merten;  Thea b. 1909 d. 1909 (one month);  Ardee b. 1909, m. Otto Fascher; Sidney Douglass b. 1911, m. Mary Otis; Lloyd James b. 1914, d. 1946;  Almeda Rachel . 1916, m. John Boardman;  Robert Orley b. 1919, m. Lyla Beckett; Ralph Bruce b. 1921,d. 1979, m. Molly Saunders; Ethel Ellen b. 1925,m. robert Atkinson.  rachel was a frail little lady of 4ft.,11 in., weighing about 90 lbs.  She had a contagious smile and caring ways and she was loved by her family and her friends.  During the depression she and Orley made their home in Indianapolis where work was available.  There they made their church home the Washington St. Presbyterian Church.  Following Orleys death she continued to live in her home there, working many hours for her church and for the cancer soc. and vol. work for the Methodist Hospital there.  In 1970 , in her   92nd year, she came to live withe her daughter Ardee Fascher.  She lived here siz yrs, passing away at the age of 97 yrs,6 mo.,24 days.  Rachels father was a soldier in the civil war fighting with the 12th reg. of Iowa Volunteers.  He participated in the battles of Gloody Run and Shiloh.  Rachels ancestry,Douglass, has been traced  from her back to 1610 in Scotland.  Orleys Lehew anc. has been traced 8 gen. back to 1718 in France.  The one remaining member of Rachels early family is Ether Maude douglass Beck who lives with her dau. in Dongola,Ill.  She is looking forward to her 103nd birthday, celebrating with an open house as she has for the past six yrs.
