William CARTER
Ancestral File - Version 4.19
William Carter was a wheelwright. That is a person who made wheeled vehicles, and a cartwright made carts. Carter's profession was interesting because the surname "Carter" was an older term for people who hauled things by cart and even made carts. It is possible that from the middle 1300's when surnames first beginning to be used, often describing a profession, that the CARTER family from generation to generation had been involved with carts, dating from the time their surname was chosen. William Carter seemed to have been very successful in business and very grateful for that success but his family life seems less happy. By his first wife, Susan CRISP, he had at least 5 children, none of them seem to have survivied beyond 20 years old, most not surviving childhood. Then his wife Susan died, leaving him with 3 children. he married seconly Martha WELLS, by whom he had at least 4 children, 3 of whom died in childhood. In just one year alone, 1740, 3 of his children died.
He married Susan Crisp 8 Nov 1721 at Marks, Tey, Essex, England . Susan Crisp was christened at Marks, Tey, Essex, England 11 Apr 1697 .
