Source Minnesota Death Index; 1930 U.S. Census,   On 1930 US census for St. Paul Marie lives with brothers John, Andrew, and sister in law Lerna, immigrated 1886. She is listed as widowed, age 47.  

On 1920 census a Marie Ward is a roomer, widow, age 47 from Austria, immigrated 1887.

Marie Ward was known as the inventor of the caramel apple.  She introduced caramel apples for the first time at the Minnesota State Fair in 1916.  The apple's popularity soon spread nationwide, but she never patented the process so had no exclusive right to it.  She received credit in numerous newspaper and magazine stories and on nationwide television programs.

kBorn in Austsria, she came to the United States with her family when she was 4 years old and was raised in Waterville, Minnesota.  She came to St. Paul and worked at various jobs before moving to Seattle.  She married, but was widowed and later returned to Minnesota where she introduced the caramel apples.

She spent many years caring for people.  She would tell of her work as a practical nurse, being a waitress at the State Fair, working for a priest and being a Mother's helper.  She was also in the millinery businlelss in Waterville.  She was an excellent seamstree.

She was baptized "Aemilius" Hoschka 16th Jan 1890 in the Roman Catholic Church.
