James Sherman DEAN
One source shows James Sherman being born in 1868. You asked also what I remember about our grandpa Dean. I remember 2 instances. One was when Daddy and Grandpa Dean were building what we call the little house. The one we grew up in. Mom said I was about 3 years old. I remember seeing them working on the floor of the house. Probably didn't have a foundation. I just remember seeing the floor and them bent over hammering nails. They built a 2 room house with a path. When Grandpa died, Grandma moved in with us. She paid to have the bedroom built on to the house. We also inherited her cooler and a couch. I have a few fond memories of her but the last one of Grandpa was seeing him in his coffin. He had white hair and he had on a blue suit. Strange the things we remember huh? Written 5/10/05 by Marilyn (Dean) Ford You asked also what I remember about our grandpa Dean. I remember 2 instances. I remember going with Grandma Dean(Daddy's mother) to visit Grandma's brother. His name was John Hutton. We were in either North Hollywood or Riverside visiting with Lawrence and Linnie. Lawrence lived in North Hollywood before moving to Riverside and buying the little house on Cover St. I often went south with Grandma Dean when she went to visit. I wanted to go with her the last time but for some reason she said no. It was on the way to the bus station to return back to Porterville that Lawrence's car was hit. Linnie, Joyce and Lawrence sustained injuries. Grandma made it to the hospital but we got the call and all of us headed for Riverside. I remember seeing her in the hospital bed and hugging her. She was saying her good byes but I didn't realize that. I was in either 2nd or 3rd grade. I loved that woman and I am so glad I got to know her. We had some great times together. So all the good times you have with your grandkids, they will remember later with much love. Anyone crying yet? Sorry about that. I was just lucky to get to know both of our grandmas. After the death of her husband, Johnson Van Delaware, Ermil's remains were exhumed and brought to Californina and buried (6 Feb 1964) beside her husband in the Woodville Cemetary, Woodville, Tulare, Californina. On the 1900 census for District 4, Center City, Chataqua County, Kansas, Ermil's name is listed as Ellie E. and she is 8 months old.
One of Daddy's story was centered in the Cochella valley. It was about him in a wagon in the fields and Grandpa getting on to him for shaking the wagon. He wasn't shaking the wagon it was an earthquake. Remember how Dad could go down on one leg and back up again with nothing to hang on too? He was proud of that one. He used to show us how to do it but I never could. Love the memories. (Written by Marilyn (Dean) Ford, 5/10/05)
