Joshua Alfred DEAN
Facts about Joshua Alfred Dean: 1. His third wife was Nancy Davenport with whom he had 6 children, the 5th being James Sherman, my grandfather. 2. He was 36 years old when he married Nancy abt. 1857. 3. His first wife was named Ruth. 4. His second wife was named Susan Jane Daubes or Dabbs. 5. He would have been 25 years old when the War with Mexico started, and he most likely would have been living in western Illinois. B. H. Roberts (historain and Church leader, spoke in a Conference talk in Oct. 1922, about regiments that were taken from western Illinois to fight in the War with Mexico, and about how one of these regiments was nearly wiped out of existence. He said that this incident "was about the only disaterous engagement we had in that war". THOUGHTS WITHOUT FACTS: Joshua was in his twenties during the time the Saints were in Nauvoo. Joshua lived within 100 miles of Nauvoo. Joshua was reported to be a Baptist. Maybe Joshua was one who persecuted the Saints. His birth records cannot be located. Did Joshua serve during the War with Mexico? Was he from one of the regiments from Western Illinois? We know he didn't get "wiped out" because he went on to live until he was 66 years old. Are his roots in Ireland with the Dukes? The 1880 Census of Pike County Illinois lists Joshua and his family and he is said to be 57 years old. that would have him born in 1823, not 1821. According to Myrtle Colvin (letter in my possession dated Sept 8, 1968), Joshua Alfred Dean was a Civil War Vetern on the Union side, and was a devout Christian. 1. One source shows Nancy Davenport's birthplace as Carter County Tennessee. Carter County is in the extreme Northeast part of the state at the border with North Carolina.
The 1880 Census for Pike County, Illinois shows a Scott Dean, 20 years old, already married with twin7 month old sons. That would mean he was born in 1860, not 1866.
Joshua Alfred Dean II first married Mary A. (maiden name unknown) while he was still in Illinois. Mary A. died giving birth to an unnamed son in 1891, after they had gone to Kansas
One source shows James Sherman being born in 1868. You asked also what I remember about our grandpa Dean. I remember 2 instances. One was when Daddy and Grandpa Dean were building what we call the little house. The one we grew up in. Mom said I was about 3 years old. I remember seeing them working on the floor of the house. Probably didn't have a foundation. I just remember seeing the floor and them bent over hammering nails. They built a 2 room house with a path. When Grandpa died, Grandma moved in with us. She paid to have the bedroom built on to the house. We also inherited her cooler and a couch. I have a few fond memories of her but the last one of Grandpa was seeing him in his coffin. He had white hair and he had on a blue suit. Strange the things we remember huh? Written 5/10/05 by Marilyn (Dean) Ford You asked also what I remember about our grandpa Dean. I remember 2 instances.
