Born in Norway and only a child of 9 years when her parents were converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and set sail for Utah. They first sailed across the North Sea to Liverpool, England, and thence to New Orleans on the clipper ship, Charles Buck. There were 300 new saints on the ship. Because of the weather it took 8 weeks instead of the scheduled 6. For many days they had only biscuits to eat and most were sick, including Andrena and her sister Mena; both lay in a stuper for days. They continued their journey up the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers on steam ship and landed in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in May, 1855. Shortly after arriving a hail storm, accompanyed by a strong cold north wind, came and blew their tent down. Anne Marie was sick at the time and died. Syvert, Andrena'a father got so cold and chilled trying to care for his family he died a few days later from chills and cholera. The company was ordered to move to higher ground and there was note even time for burials. They started across the plain in June. Boletta, Andrena's mother, became so sick with cholera that she had to ride most of the way. Caroline, the oldest sister, was strong and healthy and this helped. They arrived in Salt Lake City in mid-September. Andrena was then 11 years old. She was taken in by a family named Dreamas who had lost a little girl and lived with them for several years. She had to work hard but Mr. Dreamas taught her to read and write. Boletta and Caroline with baby Menah pushed on to S Weber where she was taken in by a family names Watts. They were good to her but she had to work very hard trying to get food for her children. Often there were only table scraps for them. About 3 years later when the saints were ordered to move south Boletta passed through Salt Lake City and noticed her little girl Andrena. After peace was restored Andrena went with her mother back to S Weber. Boletta then met a widower, Frederick Levi, from N Ogden and married him. Andrena was living there when she met and married Andrew Nicol Callahan at the age 18. See Andrew Callahan's historical notes for Andrena's history while living with him. Andrew's separation from Andrena in 1882 left the total responsibility for the whole family with her. Their youngest child Margaret was only a few months old. Amasa, age 16, assumed much of the responsibility. Actually they got along better without Andrew and later did quite well. Andrena stayed in Rosette until all of her children were married. After her daughter Margaret married William Eckersley (1902) she moved in with them. They stayed in Rosette another 6 years before moving to Sugar City, Idaho. Andrena stayed with the Eckersley's until she died in 1919 at the age of 75. This was one tough lady who weathered some of life's worst storms and came out a winner.
