REFN92 NATHANIEL WOFFORD (6th great-grandfather of Kelsey Elizabeth Denkers) was a man of great char acter. Between Toccoa and Toccoa Falls were six or eightgraves, rocked up about knee high wi th flat mountain rocks. These rocks indicated the gravesite of NATHANIEL WOFFORD. When NATHAN IEL's first son was but a tiny lad it was discovered that he was missing. The family was grea tly distressed upon finding this out. As they lived in all Cherokee Indian Territory, theirf irst fear was that he had been kidnapped. WILLIAM BENTON WOFFORD was the first white child b orn in this section of the country. Finally up walked the Indian Chief with a big basket on h is arm. Inside the basket on one end was the child on the other end, a big Thanksgiving turke y for the WOFFORD family. NATHANIEL WOFFORD and LYDIA HOPPER were married in Burke County, North Carolina, 1789. T hey were married by WILLIAM WOFFORD, Justice of the Peace. (Taken from LYDIA WOFFORD's pension claim Sept. 28, 1850.) NATHANIEL was a Private in a company commanded by Lieut. John Collins on the frontier o f Georgia, 1794. James McCracken stated he was in the same company with NATHANIEL WOFFORD, e ntering 1796 and that NATHANIEL had served some time before that. One place says "entered179 4." They served until discharged at Fort Garnes, December 22, 1796, (MusterRoll) LYDIA states that NATHANIEL volunteered as a private in Franklin Co., inLieut. John Col lins' Company in the war against the Cherokees, January 1, 1794, serving 2 or 3 years. That part of Franklin became Habersham 1818, and a part of that section became Banks 185 8-60. The above request was made that the widow, LYDIA WOFFORD, might receive bounty land unde r the Act passed September 28, 1850. NATHANIEL WOFFORD died in February 1846. He and his wife and some members of his famil y were buried in a buried in a private cemetery between Toccoa and Toccoa Falls, a short dist ance from the road. THese graves were rocked up about knee high with flat mountain rocks. Eve ntually they were hauled away.(Perhaps someone has nice stepping stones in their yard toda y at the expense of the graves of our ancestors.) Time has gone on and eventually the community decided that the highway needed to run rig ht where these graves were. Where Clarkesville Highway divides from Toccoa Falls Highway is t he site today of wherethe graves once were. The name of NATHANIEL WOFFORD appears on Cherokee Emigration Records Quarterly Report of th e Commissioners for the valuing of the improvement of the treaty, as representing the Hightow er District.
