REFN716 DANIEL MACCOMAS (Macomus, McComas) came from Scotland to Harford County, Maryland. A short note on the history of McComas'. The McComas surname is adependant of the Clan Gunn . The MacComas' come from the highlands. The GunnClan is of Norse origin. They claim desce nt from Guinn, second son of Olave the Black, King of Man and the Isles who died 1237, and th eir ancient seats were at Hallburg and Kilearnan. The Gunns were a warlike clan of Caithnes s and Sutherland. The Gunns and the Keiths were forever at enmity. Lacklan Gunn of Braemor had an only daughter , Helen, who was famous for her beauty, and the day of her marriage with her cousin, Alexande r, was fixed; but Dugald Keith, a retainer of Keith of Ackergill, whose advances she had repe lled, surrounded her father's house with a body of armed Keiths, slew many of the Gunns who w ere unprepared for an attack, and carried off the girl to Ackergill, where she became the vic tim of her abductor, and eventually threw herself from the summit of thetower. About the middle of the fifteenth century, the chief of the Clan Gunnwas George, "the Crowne r," or "Coroner" (who lived in the 1400's) through hisson, James, who lived in what the dism al jimmies of modern degeneracy have termed barbaric pomp in his castle at Clyth. Actually h e maintained the colourful culture of a Celtic chieftain's home. From his office of Corone r of Caithness he was known as Crouner Gunn, but by the natives as "Am Braisteach Mor", from a large silver broach which fastened his plaid and was the badge of his coronership. Wear y of the feud, he and the chief of the Keiths agreed in 1464 tomeet with twelve horsemen asi de at the Chapel of St. Tears and settle it amiacably. The Keiths came with 24 men, two on e ach horse. The Gunns fought desperately, but were cut to pieces. George Gunn was slain an d stripped of his arms, armour and brooch. Soon after William MacKames, a kinsman of the Gun ns, killed George Keith of Ackergill and his son, with ten men, at Drummoy. The patronymic of Gunn of Kilearnan is MacSheumais-Chataich. The chiefship is considered t o be now in the family of Gunn of Rhives, descended from a son of the 5thchief, but has no t been adjudicated in Lyon Court. It was also claimed by Gunn-Munro of Newmore. Other dependants of the Clan Gunn: Gallie, Gounson, Georgeson, Henderson, MacKames, Maclan , MacCorkle, MacCorkill, Keene, Kean, Jameson, Johnson, MacKearnish, MacKean, MacRob, MacWill iam, Manson, Nelson, Robison,Robson, Sandison, Swanson, Williamson, and Wilson. Source of information: "Clans, Septs, and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands,"by Frank Adam. The name MacComas is not a very common name even in the books about Scottish clans (Lowland s or Highlands). A lot of people in the 16th and 17th centuries from the Clan Gunn left fo r America due to clan wars. That would be about the right timefor our Daniel MacComas comin g to America, seeing as how he was recorded as being in America in the mid to late 17th centu ry. MAC COMAS is a variation of "the son of James" like Jameson, Jamieson, MacKearnish, MacO mish, etc. They allmean son of James. The MACCOMAS' do have a coat of arms, which means tha t aMACCOMAS did something noteworthy to have been "awarded" a coat of arms. It was agains t an act of Parliament to have a fake coat of arms, and our MACCOMAS coat of arms is not a fa ke.
