Obituary, Star Valley Independent: After a lingering illness, death claimed Alvin Robinson, 73, public servant, businessman, rancher and early settler of Star Valley, Thursday, July 13. He died at his home in Afton at 3:10 p.m.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in the Afton First Ward Chapel, with Counselor Lee R. Call, conducting. A large crowd attended to pay their last respects. Burial was in the Freedom Cemetery.
Alvin Robinson was born Oct. 19, 1887 in Richmond, Utah, to John Robinson and Annie Louise Christensen Robinson. Two years later a daughter (Hazel) was born, and another son, Willard, was born to this union. Willard lived only four months, and his mother also died at this time. John Robinson married Hilda Erickson June 22, 1892. Ten children were born to this union: Ada, Carl, Reynold and Leonard (twins), James, Sybil, William, Thomas, Hilda, and Justie, who died when 11 years old.
When Alvin was 16 years old, the family left Richmond, Utah by wagon and team and on horseback, trailing cattle, and migrated to Freedom to make their home. It took eight days to make the trip. They bought a three-room log house, located where the Reynold Robinson home now stands.
Alvin finished his schooling in Freedom, then attended a year of college at Logan, utah, where he majored in veterinary science. At the age of 21, he was called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, and he sailed for that country April 18, 1908. He served for 27 months, teaching the gospel to many people.
Upon his return from his mission, Alvin married Olive Hansen in the Logan LDS Temple Sept. 8, 1910. They lived in a small four-room house, milking cows and raising hay. Four children were born to this union: VaLois, Theo, Vera and Keith.
Alvin bought a store in Freedom from Will Heap and operated it. One night when everyone was out milking cows their little home caught on fire and all their belongings were destroyed. They built a new home (still standing) and lived in it only two short years when Alvin's wife, Olive, died Jan. 14, 1927, at the age of 34.
On April 12, 1928, Alvin married Thetta Ann Sanderson at Soda Springs, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple May 1, 1958. Thetta had the responsibility of raising four young children and helping with the farm work. To this union were born Martha Ione, Verna, Alvin Leroy, Richard Blake, and Etta Ann.
Alvin continued ranching and operating the Freedom Cash Store. He was active in civic and church work, serving as a stake missionary, vice-president of the Freedom State Bank, as Caribou County Commissioner for eight years, as a director in the Star Valley Swiss Cheese Co. and Lower Valley Power and Light, Inc. and was active in other organizations. He was one of three men who made surveys and bought land for the Palisades Reclamation Project. In 1943 he sold his ranch and store and moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where he bought and sold cattle for packers. In 1945 he bought a share in the Great Falls, Mont. Livestock Commission and lived there until he moved back to Star Valley two years later, residing in Afton. He bought a garage and started Robinson Motor & Implement, selling Studebaker cars and trucks, Ford tractors and other farm machinery. Ill health during the past few years caused him to sell the garage to his two oldest sons, Theo and Keith.
In Afton he served as city judge for 10 years and at one time was a candidate for mayor.
Five weeks ago, he became very ill and was taken to the LDS Hospital where he spent 10 days. The remaining three weeks he was at home where his loving wife and family cared for him. His concern, even when he was feeling terrible himself, was for others. He passed away July 13, at 3:10 p.m.
Words of tribute were spoken of his honesty and integrity and he was never known to go back on his words, a quality that sometimes cost him money but won great respect from his associates. He loved the great outdoors and enjoyed fishing and camping with his family. He loved his family and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Thetta; the following children: Mrs. Reed (VaLois) Nelson, Kaysville, Utah; Theo Robinson, Thayne; Mrs. Blaine (Vera) Campbell, Guernsey, Wyoming; Keith Robinson, Mrs. Boyd (Ione) Wilkes, Mrs. VerDean (Verna) Jensen, Alvin, Blake and Etta Ann, all of Afton.
