2. FRANK2 DEWEY (JOSIAH A.1) was born June 27, 1862 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and died September 24, 1925. He married JESSIE ELLEN BURCH1 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Notes for FRANK DEWEY:
Nebraska: the Land and the People: Volume 2
Frank Dewey at the time of his death, which occurred September 24, 1925, was in length of service the veteran county official at the courthouse in Omaha. For thirteen years he had been county clerk of Douglas County, and altogether his service in the county clerk's office covered a period of twenty-eight years. Mr. Dewey was undoubtedly one of the most popular citizens of Douglas County. He was a quiet and efficient public official, and earned the gratitude of the people by his public spirited efforts outside the strict boundaries of his public duties.

Mr. Dewey was born at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June 27, 1862, son of Josiah A. Dewey, one of the pioneer founders of that Iowa city. The Dewey family has furnished notable men and women in the country's history since the beginnings of civilization in New England. One of his ancestors, Josiah A. Dewey, married a daughter of Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island. Members of the family participated in all the wars of the nation, including the Civil war, in which Frank Dewey's older brother, Robert P., was a soldier. His grandfather was a participant in the battle of Lake Erie under Commodore Perry during the War of 1812. A relative in a collateral branch of the family was the late Admiral Dewey, the hero of the battle of Manila Bay. Mr. Dewey was a nephew of Charles H. Dewey, who at one time had the distinction of owning the second largest furniture store in the United States.

Frank Dewey came to Omaha when a boy of eleven years. His father was then dead, and the son lived with a married sister in Omaha. He acquired only limited opportunities in school, and among other early experiences he was a newsboy over the old Union Pacific Railway at a time when the newsboys made the round trip between Omaha and Sacramento. He witnessed many thrilling scenes in the wild life of the great West during the '70s.

In 1897 Mr. Dewey entered the county clerk's office as file clerk. Two years later he was advanced to chief deputy county clerk. In that position he served continuously until 1912, when he was elected for his first term as county clerk. By continuous reelection he served until the end of his life. His last term was to expire in January, 1927. As chief deputy he had twice served under Democratic administrations, though he personally was a Republican. The county clerk, D. M. Haverley, under whom he had begun his service, was during the last years of Mr. Dewey's life employed at the county clerk's office.

Mr. Dewey married at Salt Lake City Miss Jessie Ellen Burch. He had three sons. William Frederick, born in 1897, is now in the real estate business at Miami, Florida, and at the age of twenty-one married Miss Florence Hargadine, and has two children, Kathryn and Ann. The second son, Frank C. Dewey, born in 1900, is a resident of Omaha. The third son, Harry Coburn Dewey, born in 1904, is a painter by trade and lives at Omaha.

The late Frank Dewey was a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner, a member of the Knights of Pythias, B. P. O. Elks, Woodmen of the World, belonged to the Omaha Chamber of Commerce and the Episcopal Church. Outside of his official duties he is perhaps best remembered for his active interest in wholesome sport. He was a real baseball fan, and his activities in behalf of the popular extension of that sport will not soon be forgotten. The first municipal baseball diamond in an Omaha park was installed in Fontenelle Park in 1911. The permit was granted to Frank Dewey, the county clerk, by the old Park Board, and Mr. Dewey at his personal expense laid out the diamond. It was probably the first municipal ball diamond established in the state. Every park in Omaha now has a municipal baseball field in addition to other facilities for athletics. Mr. Dewey organized and equipped several baseball teams at his own expense, and this greatly increased his popularity. In 1916 there were two Dewey baseball clubs in Omaha, both of which had been fitted out by him.

Mr. Dewey was the first Omaha citizen to advocate the use of public school assembly halls for public uses. He also advocated the raising of a million dollar fund for the extension and improvement of the Omaha park system. The consolidation of some of the Douglas County offices was first advocated by Mr. Dewey, and the results of this plan as subsequently carried out effected a great saving in expenses. Two offices were added to his own, the county auditors' and the city tax department.
