Date: Sunday, October 24, 2004 4:27 AM The Nortonville News Friday August 5, 1899 Mrs. Rachel Carter Stillman. Mrs. Rachel Carter STILLMAN departed this life at her home in Nortonville on the morning of July 30, 1899, after a long period of ill health and much suffering. She was born in Charleston, Illinois, September 22, 1840. In December 1858 she was married to James R. SIRLOTT, who became a soldier in the service of his country during the rebellion. While scaling a breastwork during a charge at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, on June 27, 1864, he was shot by the enemy. On April 13, 1870 the subject of this sketch was united in marriage to Benjamin I. STILLMAN at Chillicothe, Illinois. In the year 1884 they removed to Atchison county, Kansas, where he became a prosperous farmer. In 1896 Mr. STILLMAN sold his farm on the Lane to Thomas ECKLES and established a home in Nortonville. Mrs. STILLMAN became a Christian in early womanhood and united with the Methodist chruch at her home, later she became a member of the Seventh Day Baptist church at West Hallock Illinois. On changing her residence to Kansas she also removed her church membership and united with the Nortonville Seventh Day Baptist church of which she was a member at the time of her death. She was a woman of quiet, unassuming ways which attracted to her many friends, who with four sisters, two brothers, her husband and her daughter, Miss Jessie SIRLOTT, and a large circle of other relatives are left in bereavement. Their daughter Carrie Alice STILLMAN died in Illinois at the age of about six and a quarter years. Her sisters Mrs. G.W. HARGADINE of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mrs. J. BRIDGEGROOM of Norton were present at the funeral which occurred Monday at 11 a.m. at the Methodist chruch and was conOLLAND and Daniel STEWART. Interment in the Nortonville cemetery.
