Young Farmer is Hit by Car Changing Tire

Struck by Peorians Machine East of Princeville
Charles Hargadine, 21 years old, of Akron township, was instantly killed at 2:30 oclock this morning on route 30, two miles east of Princeville when he was struck by a car driven by Elmer G. Rohman, 1102 Knoxville Avenue, a tireman for Waugh Bros. Motor Co.
Hargadine and his brother, Forrest, with Hal Predmore of Spear, and Otto Mangold, another young farmer from the same vicinity, were returning in Mangolds car from a fishing and swimming trip to the Spoon river when a tire on the automobile went flat. They stopped to change tires with two wheels on the pavement.
Mangold and Predmore were removing a spare tire from the rear of the car while the Hargadine brothers were on the pavement, Charles stopping down beside the flat tire.
Saw Light Too Late
Mangolds car was headed east and Rohman was driving in the same direction. Rohman said he did not see a light on the car until too late to stop. He swerved his car but one fender struck Charles Hargadine. His head and body were crushed, killing him instantly.
Rohman, stopped immediately and rendered what assistance he could. One supposition is that Rohman did not see the tail light on Mangolds car because Mangold and Predmore obscured the light with their bodies while they were removing the spare tire.
Forrest Hargadine saw the car coming toward him in time to fling himself into Manfolds car. He suffered an injured foot, but escaped other injury.
Charles Hargadine was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester E. Hargadine, who reside on a farm near Dunlap. The young man was not married.
Rohman was questioned following the accident by Coroner William H. Elliott but was not held. An inquest will be held this afternoon at Princeville.

Parked Car Death Held Accidental. (Tim found this while at Peoria Library in September 2000)

An accidental death verdict was returned in an inquest at Princeville yesterday afternoon into the death of Charles Taylor Hargadine, young Akron township farmer, who was instantly killed early yesterday morning when he was struck by an automobile driven by Elmer G. Rohman, 1102 Knoxville Avenue.

The jury found that Hargadine was killed two and a half miles east of Princeville on route 30 about 2:30 o'clock in the morning while helping to change a tire on a car belonging to Otto Mangold, which was partly parked on the hard road. Hargadine and his brother, Forrest, Mangold and Hal Predmore were returning from a trip to the Spoon river to fish and swim.

Rohman was driving east, the same direction Mangold's car was facing, and testified he did not see the parked machine until almost upon it. He swerved his car and struck Charles Hargadine, who was on the pavement jacking up the left rear wheel of Mangold's machine to change the tire. Hargadine's skull was fractured and his body crushed and he was killed instantly. His brother was remvoing the lugs from the wheel but saw Rohman's car in time to fling himself out of the way and escaped with only an injury to one foot. A door of the parked car was standing open and Rohman's car struck it.

Predmore was holding a lantern at the rear or the car for Mangold to take a spare tire from its rack. The men's bodies, it is believed, obscured the lantern and car's tail light from Rohmans's view. The Hargadine brothers had a flashlight also but had its light focused on the tire they were removing.

Rohman was driving a car owned by his brother, Alfred Rohman of Metamorea. Elmer Rohman is a tireman employed by a Peoria garage.
