Esther Fife
July 1, 1912-Oct 12, 2003
HERMISTON--- Esther Fife of Echo died Sunday, Oct. 12, in Hermiston at the age of 91.
Esther Eliza Fife was born July 1, 1912, on the family farm on the Umatilla River near Echo to Daniel Webster and Hannah Frances (Barnett) Bowman. She graduated from Echo High School and attended Decker Business School in Portland, graduating in 1932.
She married Luther L. (Sandy) Fife on Nov. 28, 1934, in Kelso, Wash., and they were married until 1968. She was devoted and full-time mother, raising five children on the family acreage next to Echo. She enjoyed the outdoors, spending many hours working in her garden, flowerbeds, fruit trees, and raising cattle and chickens.
After raising her children, she received her real estate license and was active in Hermiston real estate from the mid '60s until 1990. She was also active in the Echo Methodist Church, playing the piano for years for both Sunday school and for the church services.
While in real estate, her children convinced Esther to make her first plane ride to Hawaii to attend a real estate convention. She enjoyed it so much that she traveled extensively afterwards and made it at least once to every continent except for Antarctica. She also loved dancing and was active in the senior citizen dances. Her sense of humor and enjoyment of friends and family helped her to have a great life. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Darrylin and Ward Collinsworth of Stanfield; four sons and their wives, Dale and Jerrie Fife of Echo, Brent and Fran Fife of Pendleton, Rod and Jana Fife of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Terry Fife of Pendleton; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and her long-time friend and companion, Tom Watkins of Hermiston.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sandy Fife; brothers, Asie Bowman, Charlie Bowman, Homer Bowman and Kenneth Bowman; and two sisters, Cora Bowman and Gertie Gordon.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Echo Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Echo Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in Esther's memory through Burns Mortuary of Hermiston to the Alzheimer's Association or to a charity of one's choice.
Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of the arrangements.
