Following from Anna Austin;
BIRTH: CERTIFIED COPY of an entry of birth, registration District Haverfordwest,1843, found in sub-district of Saint Davids in the County of Pembroke, #428, born 21st of April 1843 at Guiliaden, Mathry Parish, Charles son of Thomas John and Maragaret (Thomas) John of Guliaden. Father was a shoemaker.

IMMIGRATION: in March 1861 the family had saved enough in the Perpetual Emmigration Fund to pay passage accross the Atlantic Ocaean to New York, on the ship called "The New York-Manchester". They landed in Catle Garden, New York, with parents and all children except Phoebe, who had married and stayed in London. Charles and William found work in a large shop in New York where military equipment was being made. His father, Thomas, set up a shoe shop in their house. They saved enough money to pay their way to Florence, Nebraska, which proved to be Winter Quarters for a large group of Saints. While thier immigration train was traveling thru eastern Missouri there was a fire in a boxcar that destroyed everything they had but a few spools ofballs of thread for sewing shoes. After six weeks the Church teams came from the valleys of the mountians to take them to Zion." They crossed the plains with Capt. Henry W. Miller's Co., leaving Florence 8 August,1862, with 60 wagons and about 665 immigrants and arrived in Salt Lake City, 17 October, 1862. The company had suffered considerable sickness and about 28 persons died on the journey," (extract from Church Chronology by A. Jensen.)

Charles, 19, and his brother, 21, hired out to drive church teams across the plains in the company of Capt. Dames. Since they had no experience it was very difficult at first, but soon they learned to yoke up the oxen and enjoyed their work. (The above account taken from the Life History of Charles John as compiled by Vivian John Baker)

SEALING TO PARENTS: Logan Temple records, film #0178087, pg 334, 10 Jan 1886, Charles John, born 21 Apr 1843, Mathry, Pembroke, Wales, sealed to Thomas John, born 29 Jan 1820, Wood, Pemborke, Wales and Margaret Thomas John, born 20 Aug 1816, Lochfair, Pembroke, Wales. (Oct 2002)

SEALING TO SPOUSE: Salt Lake Temple and Endowment House records, film #1149514, pg 543, #8137, Charles John, born 24 April 1865 (1848), Pembroke Wales, was sealed to Elizabeth Williams, born, 29 May 1868 ( 1848), Temby, Pembroke, Wales, in the Endowment House on 10 November 1865 by G Q Cannon with SL Sprague and WW Phelps as witnesses. (Salt Lake Family History Library, October 2002. Family group sheets state sealed on 11 of Nov, but there is nothing entered for the 11th, only the 10th of November.)

DIVORCE: Polygamy divorce granted on 16 Dec 1889. Because of his polygamy marraiges he was arrested and his families left alone. He finally agreed to live by the law of the land and gave up two of his wives. Agnes was very ill from a fall she had suffered many years before and she had to walk on crutches. Elizabeth and Edith thought it best if Charles take Agnes with him so he could care for her. Elizabeth was expecting her eleventh child, so Charles waited until the baby was born. It lived only a few hours. He divided his cattle and sheep with his families. He took two covered wagons, Agnes, and their eight children and moved to Mancos, Colorado.. He had married three sisters.

SOURCE: In notes from my grandmother, LaVerne Marley, who did years of research, "Thomas John and Margaret Thomas had 9 children. My grandfather, Charles John, was the third child. Charles married 1st, Elizabeth Williams and had eleven children. Their names were: Margaret Elizabeth, Thomas William, Levi, Lavina, Rebecca, Charles, George, Catherine Minnie, Emeris Samuel, Dora Maud, & Fredilea." (Other spellings of the youngest daughter exist).

More information was submitted on a family group sheet by Cecil John, with sources listed as family records, Portage Ward Records, and Mancos Ward records.

DEATH: I have a picture of his headstone in Mancos, Colorado, that was taken by and given to me by Basil John of California. (Anna)
