THE ESTATE OF JOHN W. MOORENUMBER ONE: William Moore & Evan Moore vs Polly Moore dated 1848 Estill Co., Kentucky. They claimed that Polly Moore, their step-mother had misused her position as Administrator of John W. Moore's estate, and on 29 October 1838 purchased some of the estate property at less than the actual value. The two boys claimed that it was improper for the Administrator of the estate to buy property first of all, and then they charged that Polly Moore bought horses, cows, sheep and furniture for $136.50 when the property had been appraised for $254.25. They claimed that the minor children needed the money to pay for their living expenses and education (cost $50/year). They made a second allegation against their step-mother, Polly Moore, claiming that Polly was supposed to pay a $125.00 debt of John W. Moore and failed to do so. The boys claimed that Polly also owed each heir an additional $34.20. The Court in May 1851 ruled that Polly had to pay up.This lawsuit names 12 children of John W. Moore: James W. Moore, Hardin D. Moore, William Moore, Evan Moore, Patsy Moore (Benton), John Moore, David Moore, Sally Ann Moore (Johnson), Thomas R. Moore, Susan Jane Moore (Martin) Sidney Moore and Nancy Moore. The last four (Thomas R. Susan Jane, Sidney and Nancy) were minors when John W. died in 1836 and were "destitute" according to one witness. They were taught by Eli Benton. Thomas Moore lived with his brother-in-law William Benton. Susan Moore's guardian was Josiah Park. Polly Moore was Nancy Moore's guardian in 1839.There is a variety of information in the lawsuit against Polly, such as John W. Moore owned 4 clocks, his property was worth $689.63, he owned 2 negro slaves, he owned 271 acres of land, etc.NUMBER TWO: There are three lawsuits naming the children of John W. Moore from 1838 to 1843. In one two doctors sued for their medical bills of $64 for the obviously unsuccessful treatment of John W. Moore.NUMBER THREE: Squire Finney vs Polly Moore filed 23 August 1843 in Estille Co., Kentucky. On 2 Nov 1836 Finney was security for John W. Moore estate administration (William Benton and Polly Moore). William Moore and Evan Moore claim Polly planned to leave state and take property. Finney attached Polly's land. Finney says Polly left the state after filing suite.NUMBER FOUR: Filed 16 July 1838 regarding the sale of land belonging to John W. Moore. The land was sold 13 & 14 June 1839.
