Line 255 from GEDCOM File not recognizable or too long: BURI PLAC Centerville Cemetery,, Davis Co., UT Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude, page 993: Pioneer - 24 Sep 1854, Capt. Job Smith Wagon Train Rebecca was born onDecember 23, 1814 in Great Grandsen, England. She was the seventh child in a family of nine. Her parents taught their children industry, honesty and thrift. Rebecca had no formal schooling. She taught herself to read and write and was very accurate with mathematical problems. She attended a lace school and became an excellent lace maker. She was an excellent seamstress. While very young, she was employed in a gentlemen's home as a cook. She learned this art very well and became a splendid cook and butter maker. Her butter had the reputation of being the best in the marketplace. Rebecca married John Ford on June 23, 1833 in Gravely, Cambridgeshire, England. They kept a tavern, raised stock and sheep and developed their own meat and butter route. Rebecca first heard of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from her brother-in-law, James Ford. The first time she heard the missionaries speak a sharp conviction of the truthfulness of their message filled her heart. She knew it was true and wanted to become a member. She waited nine years for her husband to know the message was true. They were both baptized in 1849. They wanted to join the body of the Church in Utah. On February 9, 1854, the Ford family with a group of converts, presided over by Daniel Garn, left England on the ship "Wendemere." They brought with them Rebecca's sister's boy, Nathan, who was twenty years old. It was planned that Nathan would work and send money back to his parents so they, too, could come to Utah. After a few weeks of preparation in Kansas City, the Ford family started their journey across the Plains in an independent company with Job Smith as Captain. After a few day's journey cholera broke out in the company following them. Their oldest son, Thomas, accepted the call to help drive a wagon for that group. He was stricken with the disease and died within six hours. His death was a severe heartbreaking trial for Rebecca. She never could talk about it. Just west of Omaha, Nebraska some of the family became ill with mountain fever (Typhoid). Her nephew, Nathan, died and also the hopes and dreams of his helping his parents emigrate to Utah. Later, her daughter, Sally, died. Her husband became seriously ill but recovered. Rebecca and John and family settled in Centerville, Utah. They endured many hardships, but as the years slipped by, they were able to provide a good living for their family. Rebecca was an excellent cook and very hospitable. She was extremely generous and was always doing considerate service for others. She had a deep abiding code of fairness. She hungered for righteousness. She would go miles to hear a gospel sermon or to go to General Conference of the Church. She was a great lady who accomplished much in a difficult world. Rebecca passed away in Centerville on April 16, 1881.
