This family settled in Fayette County, Georgia about three miles east of Fayetteville on Love Joy Road. Simon served in the War of 1812 and has a government marker on his grave located at the old home site.
John Mark had a son out of wedlock with Susannah Jeans, daughter of Dr. Jessie Jeans of South Carolina. All of the circumstances of this relationship are not known. They had one son, Jessie Jeans Murphy. Further information on the Murphy line included in notes. John later married 1) Nancy Daniel High. She was b. 21 April 1800 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, d. abt 1851 in Fayette County, Georgia. She is also buried in the Corinth cemetery across form the Murphy home. John built a log cabin in Fayette County, Georgia at 327 Corinth Road in 1825. All of John's children were born in this house. John and Nancy had the following children: 2. James Daniel Murphy (6) b. 04 Oct. 1831 in Fayette County, Georgia; d. 21 Feb. 1893 in Millcreek, Salt Lake, Utah. . He married 1) Ann Elizabeth Hudson; 2) Margaret Ward; 3) Charlotte Rebecca Murphy. 3. Holly Duke Murphy (6) b. 27 Apr. 1834, d. 22 Dec. 1865. She married John J. Gilbert. 4. Jerusha D. Demaris Murphy (6) b. 02 July 1836. She married Hosea M. Rogers. 5. John Mark Murphy Jr. (6) b. 1840, d. 17 Sept. 1862. John deeded part of the Murphy property to "The Deacons of Corinth Baptist Church, and their successors" a portion of the Murphy property "exlusively for burrieal puposes". Most of the Murphy family rests in this cemetery. The conditions of the state that "those negroes who have already started a burial lot shall be allowed only the privaledge of burying members of their immediate family". John enlisted 09 Sept. 1861 in Company E, 27th Regiment Infantry, CSA, also known as the "Bethsaida Rifle Guards". He was wounded and captured at the battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland on 17 Sept. 1862. He died of his wounds in a U. S. Hospital at Fredericksburg on either the 21st or 27th of Oct. 1862. John's body was returned home where he was buried in the Corinth Cemetery in Fayette County, Georgia. John married 2) Martha Ann Rogers on 06 April 1853 in Bartow County, Georgia. Martha was b. 31 Aug. 1826, d. 23 July 1894. She was the daughter of Robert and Mary S. Rogers of Bartow County, Georgia. John and Martha had the following children: 6. George Washington Murphy (6) b. 01 Apr. 1854, d. 24 Mar. 1924. Georgie married Ann Eliza Beck. 7. Robert W. Murphy (6) b. 1856, d. 1862. 8. Joseph Robert "Joe" Murphy (6) b. 17 Feb. 1862, d. 02 Jan. 1914. He married 1) Alice Samantha Moore, 2) Harriett Elizabeth Dean. The following Obituary appeard in the Christian Index, June 08, 1863. The Christian Index is /was a Baptist newpaper. John M. Murphy departed this life at his residence in Fayette county, March 21st, 1863, in the 68th year of his age. The deceased was born in Union District, S. C., March 2d, 1795; he removed to Georgia in 1826, was twice married, first to Mrs. Nancy High, then to Miss Martha A. Rogers, daughter of Robt. Rogers of Cass (Bartow) county. Bro. Murphy joined the Baptist church at Flint River (Jonesboro) in the year 1840, and was at the time of his death an orderly member of the Baptist church at Fayetteville. Bro. M. was a good husband, indulgent parent, humane master, kind neighbor, and useful member of the church. He has left an amiable wife and interesting family to mourn his death; but " they mourn not as those who have no hope." In the midst of their sad bereavement they are conforted by the hope that his departed spirit has gone to that "rest that remaineth for the people of God", where after life's toil is over, they hope to meet again. After John's death, Martha remarried to James Butler (1812 - 1878), 20 June 1865.
