Ignatius Bohe: Birth & death dates per gravestone. Kate Belle Bohe (family records) claimed he was born in "Mt. Belair, Alsace, France" which is probably Montbeliard, located at the southern end of Alsace. She wrote that he died in Ottumwa and is buried there, and that he was 42 years old (so born in 1931). Reference: 1860 Census-- Ignatius was born in Baden, Germany, and occupation was listed as plasterer. Listed as age 28 (so born in 1831). His wife Pauline was listed as age 23 (so born in 1836, which is confirmed by her passport). Reference: Letter from Bert Bohe to his son (c.1951): Ignatius came to the US and first settled in Louisville, KY, then went on to Franklin, Lee County, Iowa. Ignatius and Pauline Zaffle Bohe are buried in the Ottumwa Cemetery on Court St. All the Bohes were Catholics in the old country for hundreds of years. Reference: Attachment to the above letter: Ignatius died when his son John Thomas Bohe was 11 years old (1873). Reference: Ruth Bohe Miller (daughter of Kate Belle & Edward John Bohe) 7-30-90: Ignatius was thrown from a horse and killed, and died when Edward John was 3 years old (1874). Ignatius Bohe and Pauline Zaffle were married in the oldest Catholic church in Louisville (Ref: Letter from Carl Bryan to Harry Bryan, 26 Jan 1971. Letter from Ruth Bohe Miller to her sister Maxine, 6 Sep 1985, says she heard the same thing from her father Edward John Bohe). Letter from Carl Bryan says his mother (Ignatius's daughter Pauline) told him that Ignatius was raised in an orphanage, and that Carl's brother Paul said Ignatius was raised by a French family near Metz, Lorraine, France; that he was a skilled craftsman and artist, and did fancy rococo plaster- ing work for decorative purposes.
Pauline Bohe's maiden name was Zaepfel, Anglicized to Zaffle after immigrating with her father. Reference: Passport, dated 19 Dec 1853 in Baden Baden, Germany for Martin Zaepfel (age 57) and daughter Paulina Zaepfel (age 17, so born in 1836). Martin was a widower. Passport lists Pauline's birthplace as Haueneberstein (now a suburb of Baden Baden, 5 miles north of the west end of Baden Baden). She had blonde hair, blue eyes, height 5'1". From the envelope of the pass, the route of travel was from the port of Le Havre, France to Great Britain and then to the port of New Orleans. (Copy of the pass was obtained from Harry Bryan, from a letter his brother Carl wrote in 1971; we do not have a copy of the envelope.) Carl wrote that his mother said her mother (Pauline) was educated in a convent. Pauline and her father (Martin) and brother (Anton) and his wife (Stevannes) arrived in New Orleans on Feb. 17, 1854. (Ref: microfilm passenger list, found by Jan Cozad). 1860 Census: Birthplace was Baden, Germany. Listed as age 23 (so born in 1836, which confirms the passport). 1900 Census: Claims she was born in June, 1834 (not 1836), and emigrated from Germany in 1854. On 1900 Census, Pauline stated she had had 9(?) children. At the time, Pauline lived with her daughter Pauline (Bohe) Bryan and her family in Pocatello, Idaho. Letter from Bert Bohe (c.1951) says she died in 1904 and that she is buried along with Ignatius in the Ottumwa Cemetery. Article in the "Ottumwa Courier" (Tuesday, Oct 11, 1904) reports that Pauline died on Sunday in Pocatello, ID, and "the remains will be brought to Ottumwa for interment."
George Bohe was living in Ottumwa, Iowa (Ref: 1900 Census); birth date listed as Nov 1857. Reference: 1860 Census (Franklin Township, Lee County, Iowa): George was 3 years old (so born 1857). Reference: Letter from Bert Bohe (c.1951): George Bohe was the old- est in the family, born in 1856 (1857?), and died in 1932 at the age of 75. He and his wife Elizabeth are buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery (a Catholic cemetery) in Denver. Reference: Kate Belle Bohe, family notes: George was married to Lizzie Quirk in Ottumwa.
Louisa Bohe: Reference: 1860 Census, Franklin Township, Lee Co., Iowa: "Louisia" Bohe, age 1 year. Not listed on 1870 Census.
Bohe: John Thomas Bohe was born in Feb 1862, per 1900 Census, and was living in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1900. Reference: Obituary in "Ottumwa Courier" 9 March 1922: At this time, George Bohe lived in Denver, CO, Edward John Bohe lived in San Diego, CA, and Pauline (Bohe) Bryan lived in Pocatello, ID. Ref: the same source: Born 14 Feb 1862. When he was 5 years old, his parents moved to Ottumwa, where he resided until he died. His father (Ignatius) died when he was 11 years old. He was started working at Kings Brothers cigar factory, worked his way up through all phases of manufacturing cigars, became an expert cigar maker. He then went into the cigar business on his own, operating a factory at the time he died. He joined the (First) Congregational Church in 1892. Reference: Kate Belle Bohe, family notes: John was married to Dora Hendricks in Ottumwa.
Pauline Bohe was born in 1864 (Ref: 1870 Census, Franklin Township, Lee Co., Iowa), and is listed as Lena Bohe. Kate Belle Bohe's family notes (1931) calls her Aunt Lena Bryan, living in Pocatello, Idaho. She married Charles Bryan in Ottumwa, Iowa. Kate Bohe's notes (1930s and 1940s) never indicate a death date, so Lena probably died after 1945. Reference: Ruth Bohe Miller, 7-30-90: Charles Bryan was an official on the Oregon Short Line, which ran through Provo, Utah, and Salt Lake City and Pocatello.
Frank John Bohe (Ignatius' son) married Mary Lewis, who died when daughter Mary was born. They also had another daughter Frances. Frank Bohe died in Sioux Falls, S.D. (Ref: Kate Belle Bohe, family notes). Reference: John Thomas Bohe obituary, 1922: The family (Ignatius) moved to Ottumwa when John Thomas was 5 years old (so in 1867). Therefore, Frank (along with brother Edward John) would be born in Ottumwa. But this date (5 years old, 1867) is not correct. The 1870 Census of Franklin (not Ottumwa) lists the Bohe family, and Frank is 1 year old.
Edward John Bohe was born in Ottumwa, Iowa (Ref: his son Edward R. Bohe). He was married in Monmouth, Ill. on Aug 1 (Ref: Bill Bohe's photo album, put together by Kate Belle Bohe; Barbara has it). But Ruth Bohe Miller said Aug. 5 (Ref: Interview 7-30-90 in La Jolla). Aug. 1 is probably correct. They soon moved to nearby Alexis, Ill. They moved to Salt Lake City when daughter Ruth was 6 months old (1898). They had wanted her to be born in Utah and were packed and ready to move, when Edward John got appendicitis. They didn't have a hospital, so he was operated on in a relative's home, and some college medical students came to watch. Edward John had a cigar shop in Salt Lake City. They moved to Pocatello, Idaho when daughter Maxine was a couple of years old c.1908). He had a cigar factory there, and he named his store and brand of cigars "El Toroso", the Bull and Bear. (Ref: Ruth Bohe Miller, 7-30-90). They moved to San Diego in 1916, then moved to Vancouver, Wash. in 1918 and stayed for 2 years, where he worked in the shipyard as a guard. They moved back to San Diego, then moved to Salt Lake City again in 1923, and finally back to San Diego in late 1924. (Ref: Edward R. Bohe, Jan., 1984). In 1924 in S.L.C., he was employed by the Arthur Nash Tailoring Co. as a salesman of suits and overcoats. He was offered a position in San Diego and took it. In Dec. 1925 while going to call on a customer, he was struck by a motorcycle. He was never able to work full time again. (Ref: family notes). Edward John Bohe had brown hair, brown eyes, height 5'5.5". He resided at 3781 6th St. in Nov 1917, and at 4385 New Jersey St. in March 1918 (both in San Diego). (Ref: State of Calif. hunting license and angling license). Services were held 23 Oct 1948; cremation. Interred at Greenwood Cemetery in the "Chapel of the Chimes" building.
