Reference:  1860 Census (Franklin IA).  Anton was born in Baden,
Germany.  Occupation was listed as a huckster (a peddler).
Listed as age 33 (so born in 1827).  But Jan also gives his
age at death as 51 yrs 12 days, so born in 1827.

Anton was a captain in the French army (Baden borders Alsace
Lorraine, France).  Arrived in the port of New Orleans on Feb.
17, 1854 (Ref: microfilm passenger list, found by Jan Cozad).

Kate Belle Bohe, family notes:  mentions 3 "cousins on mother's
Pauline Zaffle's) side": George, John and Louise Zaffle.  That
"Louise marrid a Bloom, Russel Glowell, Colo."  That "John Zaffle
died in Feb" (no year).
1860 Census lists a wife and kids below Anton's name:  wife,
Stevannes (age 30), from Baden, Germany; and children Magdalene
(age 3), Mary (2) and Louisa (3 months).

fever.  Catholic, buried in Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa.  Immi-
grated 1853-54.  Moved first to Louisville.  Naturalized 29 Oct
1860 in Fort Madison, Lee Co., IA.  Worked as a pork packer and
butcher.  Places of residence: Baden Germany, Louisville KY,
Franklin IA, Keokuk IA, Ottumwa IA.
