Notes:
William Wilson was an American who came to California by sea on an
otter trapping expedition, and remained from about 1827 [actually
1824] on. -- Note from Bea Polloreno.

"Three years later, Lord Cochrane, British privateer helping the
revolting South American colonies, touched at Mazatlan and sent two
small ships to California for food stuffs. His visit, however, had
no effort beyond contribution of half a dozen of his men to the
popilation of Alta California. Four Branciforte residents from 1824
were undoubtedly from the source: William and Samuel Buckle, Julian
Wilson, and William Archison.
"Thomas Doak, first American settler in California, was briefly
in Branciforte in 1823 and was baptized across the river. The
following year, 1824, the following four "foreigners" appeared, who
stayed: Julian (William) Wilson, Virginian; and the Buckle brothers
and Trevelhan, Britons. A fifth came soon afterward, Michael Lodge,
a Dublin sailor, in 1828, with his first wife. The Buckle brothers
later changed their name to Thompson (no explanation)."
William Wilson was age 24 in 1817 (so born 1793).

Note by B.P.: William Wilson was called Julian; William sounded
like that to the Spanish.
