                   Commandante Juan Prado Mesa set out from San Francisco with a force
to discipline the Tulare Indians, who were driving off livestock and
horses from the Santa Clara valley to San Joaquin.  Three Spanish
soldiers were wounded, and Juan Mesa was killed when an arrow struck
