George W. SANDOE

Birth:
16 Dec 1842
Shenandoah, Schuykill, Pennsylvania
Death:
28 Jul 1915
Cuyahoga, Ohio
Marriage:
15 Aug 1868
Notes:
The family has always had that George W. Sandoe was born 16 Dec 1842 in Shenandoah, Schuylkill Co., PA. Correspondence from the Historical Society of Schuylkill County dated 17 Dec 2002 stated:
"Shenandoah was formed out of Mahanoy Township about 1870. Mahanoy was formed from Rush Township about 1843. I checked the Rush Township census records for 1840 and 1850. I was unable to located the Sandoe name. Counties were not required to maintain vital statistics until 1897. Therefore, we must rely on Church records and newspaper articles for such information. We have no records for Rush Township. Signed: H.T. Crown, Research Volunteer"

There is an Eberhardt family bible as of Feb 2003 it was in the possession of Thurman Jester of Wooster Ohio. In that bible George is listed with birthdate of 16 Dec 1842 and Helen Eberhardt's birthdate is listed as 18 Aug 1844.

Also in the 1880 Census for Bulter, thre is a Reverend W.B. Sandoe and Nancy Sandoe living in Butler County and their next door neighbors were the Eberhardts. I know that W.B. and Nancy had at least on son who was also a reverend and that was H.H. Sandoe born in 1841 in Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, PA. There is a biography on him in the History of Fairfield County Ohio. On this 1880 census W.B. Sandoe notes his own and his father's birthplace as PA. This city and county of birth matches what we had for George W. Sandoe, but as noted above "Shenandoah" of Schuylkill County did not exist until 1870 and both our George and H.H. Sandoe were born in the 1840s.

His great-granddauther, Dorothy (Sandoe) Snair recalls hearing that George Wesley Sandoe and family were followers of John Wesley, a famous preacher of the reformation that came out of Switzerland. There were at least three ministers, George Sandoe, W.B. Sandoe and H.H. Sandoe in Butler County PA who also had ties to some other places familiar to the family such as Wayne, Cuyahoga and Summit Counties in Ohio and Wooster, Ohio. Refer to the History of the Church of God easily found on the Internet for more information. Unfortunately, this history did not provide any biographical sketches on any of the ministers. The Reverend George Sandoe was born about 1827, too old to be our George.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During conversation with Norman "Wayne" Sandoe on 6 Dec 2002, he stated that he discovered a George W. Sandoe as the first casualty of Gettysburg when he was in 8th Grade. This is not our George Sandoe as our George had children after the Civil War. He said that he spoke with Clyde Ellsworth Sandoe, Sr., about it and was told that the George who died in Gettysburg was a "distant Uncle" of Clyde's and he said that Clyde explained and described the monuments to the soldier George in Gettysburg. As an adult, Wayne visited Gettysburg and discovered the parks and monuments as Clyde described them.

Individual found on Application for Marriage License #2352 at the Butler County Courthouse
Man: John W. Sandoe, age 21, residence - Canal Fulton, OH, parents: George & Ellen, Occupation - farmer. Woman: Sarah L. Lutz, age 19, residence - Middle Lancaster, PA, Parents: John & Emily H.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Age: We had always had a birth year of 1872, but on the marriage license application he listed his age as 21. As they were married 18 Feb 1892, and he reported to be 21 then in April of 1892, he would have turned 22 years old making his birth year 1869-1870. This is also be supported by the 1880 census, which listed his age as 10.

Feb 2003 - A few pages of a family bible were found, perhaps the John W. Sandoe - Sarah Louise Lutz family bible, and the first "births" listed are that of John W. Sandoe, April 13, 1869 and Sarah L. Sandoe (nee Lutz) on 12 Jun 1873.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Individual found on correspondence date 8 Nov 2002 received from Zion Lutheran Church as being the husband of Sarah (Lutz) and being confirmed a member of the Church on 18 Dec 1892.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
His granddaughter, Dorothy (Sandoe) Snair recalls hearing that he became an alcoholic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Occupations: John Wesley Sandoe worked at a postmaster for Butler County, on his marriage license application he noted his occupation as a farmer, and we know he was later a circus "roust-a-bout" for the Hageneck*Wallace Shows and died in the Great Circus Train Wreck of 1918, which occurred in Hammond, Indiana. There is a family story on John Wesley Sandoe perhaps surviving the wreck, however. His granddaughter, Virginia May (Sandoe) Peters, recalls her mother, Laura Evelyn (Corrigan) Sandoe relating an incident wherein she believed she saw her father-in-law some years after his alleged death. Laura recounted that one day (in the 1920s)she answered the door to find a door to door salesman (common in those days) and was startled because the man she saw was her supposedly dead father-in-law. The man quickly turned and walked away. She called for her husband, Clyde. but by time he got to the door and outside the man had disappeared. Hmmm???
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upon a search at the Butler Courthouse in "Registration of Births 1893-1905" under "S" was listed Arla L. SANDOE, born 17 Jun 1895 to John W. SANDOE, farmer, and Jane Elizabeth SANDOE in Lancaster Township. It was recorded on 28 Dec 1895.

I do not believe it can be our John W. SANDOE, as the mother's surname is listed as SANDOE indicating she is a spouse because in this particular book of birth records the mother's maiden names were not listed. Plus, at that time, our John Wesley was already married to Sarah Louise LUTZ and had at least two children. Perhaps this John W. SANDOE is an Uncle or cousin of our John Wesley SANDOE.

The only other SANDOE birth recorded at the Butler Courthouse during the 1893-1905 period was that of our Laura Ellen SANDOE. She was listed as "Sandoe, Laura born on 1 Nov 1900 to Jno. SANDOE, laborer, and Sadie SANDOE."
