JAMES CORRIGAN. James Corrigan may well be counted as one of the busy and successful men of Cleveland. His activities have extended into two continents, and have embraced many forms of enterprise, all of which have been made tributary to the material advancement and upbuilding of the city of his chose home. He is, in the true sense of the word, a self-made man, and whatever he has done has been through his own energy, push and foresight. Mr. Corrigan was born at Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada in 1848. While he was yet a youth his parents removed to Cleveland, and eight years later to Minnesota. Anxious to do something for himself, the son, when but seventeen years of age, shipped on a lake vessel, and remained in that service some six years. In 1868, with a wish to better himself, and a belief in the futre of the rapidly developing oil business, he engaged successfully in oil refining in Cleveland. In 1879, he leased his refinery to the Standard Oil Company and, accompanied by his family, removed to the province of Gallacia, in Austria, where he opened a refinery for the refining of the product of an oil field in that country. The product was disposed of in the markets of Austria, Hungary and Germany. Mr. Corrigan conducted this business until 1883, when he decided to return to America. He sold his works and came direct to his old home in Cleveland. The opening possibilities of the ore regions of Lake Superior impressed themselves upon his mind, and it was not long before he was making investments in that direction. These proved profitable, and he rapidly amassed a fortune. In 1893, he formed the firm of Corrigan, McKinney & Co. Since then he has established a blast furnace in Cleveland, two furnances in Sharpsville, and one at Scottdale, Pa. In connection with his Lake Superior mining interests, he caused to be built a number of vessels for use in the ore-carrying business, and as grain freighters. All of these enterprises have had Cleveland as their headquarters, and have added to the city's business movements to that extent. In 1895, Mr. Corrigan again extended the sphere of his activities, and the firm of Corrigan, McKinney & Co., - having Price McKinney and Judge Stevenson Burke as associates - invested in gold mining lands in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. They constructed a railroad to their mines, and built ore crushers and a mill to treat ores. The mines have proved rich, and the product as turned out at the mill shows gold of a purity of 0.9841, and silver of a purity of 0.956. The offices of the company are in the Perry-Payne Building, Cleveland. As will be readily guessed from the above, Mr. Corrigan is a very busy man. He keeps the run of all his enterprises close in hand, and his native force and executive ability are felt in everything he touches. He has never had time for office-holding or public labor of any sort. He is, in every sense of the word, a good citizen and a most welcome power and force in the city of his chosen home.
