Michael LOUNSBERRY
Michael Lounsberry (born 1680) bought land in Stamford, CT on 25 Jan 1702 or 1703 from Samuel WEBB for forty-three pounds and ten shillings. The property was seven acres of upland on the west side of Mill River, and woodland ofPepper Weed Ridge near Taunton. In 1706 or 1707 he obtained twenty-seven acres in the Rocky Neck, and about the same time obtained other land in partnership with Edmund LOCKWOOD, whose siter, Sarah Lockwood, he married. On 19 Oct 1709, he sold the land in Rye, New York that he had inherited from his father. He was chosen highway surveyor at Stamford town meeting 15 Dec 1719 and again on 5 Jan 1725 or 1726. On 18 Dec 1722 he was one of the collectors chosen to "gather ye Revarant Mr. Davenports rate." He died at Stamford 20 Jan 1731 and his will was dated two days previously and was proved 16 Apr 1731. Lillian Lounsberry (Miner) Selleck genealogical investigation mentions many errors in a book titled "Lockwood Genealogy". Lillian reports that there were two Sarah Lockwoods and confusion over which Sarah was married to Michael Lounsberry. She determined through probate records that this Sarah Lockwood, daugther of Edmund Lockwood and Hannah Scott was the one married to her ancestor, Michael Lounsberry. Lillian discovered that the other Sarah Lockwood was the daughter of Ephraim Lockwood and is identified as such in her marriage record to John PLATT, Jr. Furthermore, Lillian notes that the other Sarah would have been about 51 years old when the youngest of Michael Lounsberry's children was born, again evidence that she could not be the Sarah married to Michael. Lillian notes: "The parentage of Sarah Lockwood, the wife of Michael Lounsberry, is clearly proved by her brother Edmund's will, and unquestionably she is the third (unnamed) daughter mentioned in the record of her father's estate. The "Lockwood Genealogy" errs first in making this Sarah the daughter of Jonathan Lockwood and second in introducing the children of Edmund into the family of Ephraim Lockwood, Jonathan and Ephraim being sons of Robert Lockwood. Since many other genealogical works have been led into error by following these mistakes, a brief summary of the other Lockwood family is appended." On 11 May 1754 (Stamford, CT deed F:115) Joshua Lounsberry conveyed to Nathaniel HUBBARD et al "part of right of my grandfather Edmund Lockwood, dec'd...and descended to his son, John, deceased, and by him to my mother Sarah Lounsberry"... (Joshua here is slightly confused in that Edmund Lockwood's son John predecased his father, but Stamford common land rights of both Edmund and John Lockwood descended to Edmund's children, including Sarah Lockwood Lounsberry, Joshua's mother.)
