NAME: BELLENGER aka BELLINGER Our Grandmother Sophia Bellenger , according to the1871 Census, was an "inmate" of the District Stepney Union Workhouse (then aged two years) and under the "Where Born" on the page is written "Not Known". My two brothers, Richard and John remember her as being a very lovely, very kind, lady who came up to Welwyn Garden City often to visit and she was very much loved by the family. She also had either letters or numbers tatooed just above the underneath of her wrist - this could well have been some form of identification for the Stepney Union Workhouse days. Stepney Union Workhouse is in Southwark, London, England. London Metropolitan Archives (Archive Reference No: Booth B162-168) has what is known as " The Booth Collection of Stepney Union Workhouse" . Perhaps some information about the lifestyle she lived there would give us some insight into the life she lived.
