ELIZABETH BOOTH, 81627 TERRITORIAL RD., EUGENE, OR 97405; 11/98; GT GRDMOTHER DAR #11137, VOL. 12; MRS. MARY SCHOONMAKER ANDREWS, b. PA, w/o Frederic Hamlin Andrews; OBIT: After only a few day's illness with pneumonia, Mrs. Mary Stockton Schoonmaker died last Sunday evening at the home of her daughter Mrs. Frederick Hamlin Andrews, in Plainfield, NJ. She passed away like one falling asleep and had retained her faculties to the last. Her illness began Wednesday, but up to that time she had been in her usually happy mood. Far advanced in years, but young in spirit, deeply interested in all that went on about her, she was an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact. Mrs. Schoonmaker was the daughter of Rev. Joseph Stockton, one of the Early Presbyterian ministers west of the Allegheny mountains. She was the widow of James Schoonmaker, and both were of Pittsburgh. She was born here August 7th, 1818, and lived here until she removed to Plainfield to make her home with her daughter. Besides Mrs. Andrews, she leaves 4 sons, Col. James M. Schoonmaker, of Pittsburgh, George B, Schoonamker of NY, Frederick W. Schoonmaker of Montclair, and S.L. Schoonmaker of NY and 2 daughters, Mrs. Wm. P. Wood of Pittsburgh, and Mrs. James J. Brown of Ashville, NC. She leaves also a sister, Mrs Thomas Updike, of Pittsburgh. Mrs. Schoonmaker was one of the few who remained who had an acquaintance with Gen. Lafayette, the French patriot, who was of so much service to our country in the Revolution. On a trip to this country in after years, he passed through Pittsburgh and stopped at the home of her aunt, where she met him. One of Mrs. Schoonmaker's treasured keepsakes was a personal letter from Pres. Lincoln to her mother in 1864, thanking her for her gift of 100 pairs of stockings knitted by herself for the Union soldiers. The letter is framed and contains a photograph of her mother and Pres. Lincoln. As recently as last October, Mrs. Schoonmaker came to Pittsburgh to attend the sesqui-centennial and was one of the few old natives of the city to whom special honors were accorded. She made the trip in Col. Schoonmaker's private car. The body was brought to Pittsburgh for interment and was laid to rest in the Alleghaney Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.
