Parish records, St. Ann's and St Stephens, Cecil Co., MD DR. T.C. STOCKTON, 1911, PG 253; "At outbreak of the Amer. Rev, entered the army as LT in one of MD reg., with which he immediately marched to NY. He was, it is believed, at the battle of Long Island, and in all subsequent actions of note, up to the storming of Ft. Washington where he became a prisoner of war. ... when he was exchanged, he found himself outranked in the services and resigned his commission. Sometime afterward, he removed to DE and remained a citizen of the State until his death in 1822. Served in DE militia with rank of Brig. Gen, commanded the volunteers of DE in War of 1812." Hugh Stockton, 3/91; in father's will dated 29 JAN 1782, proven 5 JUN 1783; bequeathed sum of 700 pounds specis CC NEILSON: served with Capt Joshua George's Co., 18th Batt, as 2nd Lt, on 20 JUL 1776; 5 OCT-12OCT 1776, 2nd Lt, 2nd Reg of Foot, Col. Wm. Richardson's Reg. He next appears on a 7 JUL 1777 War Dept. ledger as having received $200 from an "account with officers who made their escape from Long Island". He apparently was a Lt. in 7th MD Reg., under John Gunby, located in Wilmington on 28 DEC 1777. However, in AUG 1778, he was entered on a roll as having been a prisoner, made his escape from NY, and never joined his reg. In SEP 1778 at White Plains, NY he was entered on the Reg. list as 1st Lt. John left MD sometime after SEP 1778 and went to Newcastle Co., DE where he was a member of Capt. John Clark's Co., 2nd Reg. DE militia in MAY 1779. John served 9 years in the DE militia during 1807-1816, rising from Lt Col. to Brig Gen. During the War of 1812, John was a principal militia leader, credited with being in command when the British landed at the head of the Elk River. He resigned 5 MAR 1816. John first purchased land in New Castle Co., in 1780; bought 18 parcels between 1783-1813; sold 16 parcels between 1783-1814; 5 of the sales between 1796 and 1818 bore the notation "with wife"; 1784 became a Warden of Immanuel (Epsicopal) Church, Wilmington; again in 1790; 5 FEB 1785, appointee as trustee of county loan office, charged with redeeming bills of credit issued by DE before or since the Declaration of Independence; 5 OCT 1790 appointed county sheriff; 26 MAY 1813 appointed by Gov to be a director of the Farmers Bank of DE; enumerated on census' 1800, 1810 and 1820 For many years he lived on a farm about 2 miles from Wilmington on the Hares Corner Rd; he also lived in the Bauduy Mansion opposite the Wilmington City Hall. ABSTRACT OF JOHNS 1819 WILL: "bequeathed to his grandson Stockton Strawbridge if he survived him and reached 21, his silver tankard and $4000. Remainder of estate to son, Thomas (included phrase): prior to my last intermarriage, conveyed to my son Thomas a plantation in Bucks Co., PA. Thoman and fried James B. Black to be executors. Fassett Prothonotary of the Court of Common pleas for Newcastle Co. DE. When War of 1812 broke out, he resigned to enter the military service ... 10 SEP 1812 he was commissioned Capt. of the 3rd Art. in reg. army, under Col. Malcomb. He distinguished himself at the storming of Ft. George, 27 MAY 1813. for his gallantry he was transferred to the 42nd Inf. 28 SEP 1813, and on 15 APR 1814, made Major of the 42nd; 17 MAY 1815, he was retained as Capt of the 6th inf, with brevet of Mjr from 15 APR 1814; transferred to corps Artillery 17 MAY 1816; transferred to 3rd Artillery, 1 JUN 1821. He resigned from the army 6 JUN 1825, and returned to his home at Newcastle. in 1844 was elected Gov. of DE on Whig ticket. He only lived to serve a year and 2 months, and died of heart disease. He was Episcopalian and a member of the Society of Cincinnati in right of desc. from his father, Lt John Stockton of the continental Army.
