Information from Lena Jane Durst Hale (deceased) to daughter-in-law, Sandra Murray Hale, 503-657-9444. 19905 Bellevue Way, West Linn, OR 97068. When Mattie Bixwell's husband, David Smith, died, she married Johannes (John) Durst. After Mattie Bixwell died, Johannes (John) Durst married his step-daughter, Emma Smith. Information from Lena Jane Durst Hale (deceased) to Daughter-in-Law, Sandra Murray Hale. The tombstone date for death was 1953. Johannes Durst changed his name to 'John' after he came to America. 6 Oct 1971: Letter & Info from Mrs. Jeanne M. Secord, Box 245, John Day,OR. 22 Nov 1971: Letter to Mrs. Lawrence Dahl, 2319 Broadmead Rd., Louisville 5, KY. Letter requesting info on Durst family. No answer. 26 Sept 1972: Letter to Mrs. Florence Sandquist, 141 So. Canova Ct., Denver, CO 80219: Letter requesting info on Smith and Durst Famiies. No ans. Newspaper?: "1952; Funeral Services were at Long Creek Community church Friday for John Durst, 9i0, who succumbed March 10 at the home of his son Ted Durst in Round Basin following a short illness. The Rev. Albert E. Allen of Canyon City officiated. Interment was in the Hamilton cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Driskill's mortuary, John Day. Born November 15, 1862 at Lenthal, Switzerland. Durst came to the United States in 1881. He lived for two years in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, later making his home in Minneapolis, Minn. Moving to Oregon in 1888, he settled in Long Creek where he lived the remainder of his life He was a member of the Luthern Church.." Mr. Durst was preceded in death by his wife Emma and one son Fred Durst. Surviving are six children, Johnnie and Ted Durst of Long Creek, Mrs. Katie Hinton of Hamilton, Mrs. Louise Cardwell of Bales, Mrs. Bertha Dennison of Spray and Mrs. Lena Hale of Prineville; two brothers, Henry Durst of Monument and Nicholas Durst of Pine Island, Minn.; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren."
