Jefferson College conferred upon him the degree of D.D. in 18466. He m. 1st, in 1831, Nancy Rogers Clark, dau. of James Clark, who was b. in 1804 at Mercersberg, PA., and d. 18 SEP 1857 at Cross Crk, PA; 2nd Mrs. Gladden. In politics he was a Whig and Republican, and in religion a Presbyterian. He d. 5 MAY 1882, at Cross Crk, PA HISTORY OF WASHINGTON CO., PA, 1893, PG 800; " The Rev. Dr. John Stockton was born on the homestead on the 1th of NOV, 1803, and entered Washington College, where he graduated on the 3d of OCT 1820. He studied theology with the Rev. Dr.John Anderson, of Upper Buffalo, and on the 25th of APR, 1825, was licensed by the Presbytery of Washington to preah the gospel,and aafterwards spent a year at Princeton College. He received a call through the Presbytery from the Cross Creek Church, which he accepted, and remained as their pastor half a century, when, on account of declining health, he resigned 29 MAR 1877, to take effect in June. He remained at Cross Creek the scene of his life long labor, and died 5 MAY 1882. His son, Thomas is a physician at Cross Creek, his native place." Stockton, "John Stockton (father of subject) was born Nov. 18, 1803 in Washington co., PA, and was reared to manhood on his father's farm near Washington. He was a student at Washington College, graduating therefrom in 1820, and then enteried the Theological College at Princeton, NJ. On June 20, 1827, he was ordained in the Cross Creek Church of Washington county, and preached regularly for that congregation until June 20, 1877, proclaiming the 'glad tidings of the Gospel" for over 50 years. Although many times offered a more lucrative position, in which he would seemingly have a wider scope, his only answer to such propositions was: "I have started with my people here, they are my children, I will live and die with them, and be buried among them." In 1831 he was united in marriage with Nancy Clark, daughter of James Clark, a prominent farmer of Franklin Co, PA., and 6 children came to bless their union, namely: Thomas C.M., James C. (a physician living in West Philadelphia), John P.P. (a minister of West Unity, Williams Co., OH), Robert W.G. (deceased in infancy), William (a graduate of Muskingum College), and Marion E. (wife of Hugh Lee, a prominent farmer of Cross Creek twsp.)"
