Obituary; Joseph Stockton Schoonmaker; Very many in the two cities learned
with sincere sorrow of the death on Monday of Joseph Stockton Schoonmaker, who
passed away at his home in Plainfield, NJ at the age of 54 years.
Mr. Schoonmaker was a representative of one of Pittsburgh's oldest families,
being a son of the late James Schoonmaker, a leading business man of his time.
As a boy, he was one of the manliet, brightest lads at the old Sewickley
Academy, conducted by the late Rev. Joseph Traveli. As a young man, he served
his country well enlisting in the 14th PA Cav, commanded by his brother, Col.
James M. Schoonmaker. After active and honorable service he entered business
with his brother. In 1872 Mr. Schoonmaker married Miss Arabella Dalzell, d/o
the late Robert Dalzell. This lamented man is survived by his widoe and 4
sons. These are Robert Dalzell Schoonmaker, a student at Princeton, George F.
Schoonmaker, Ralph Schoonmaker and William Schoonmaker. Two Brothers, Col.
James M. Schoonmaker and Mr. S.I, Schoonmaker and a sister Mrs. W.P. Wood, of
this city, also survive. About 10 years ago Mr. Schoonmaker removed to the
east, and 8 years since retired from active business. A recent severe attack
of "La Grippe" had somewhat impaired his health, and this led to heart disorder
ending in a fatal attack of apoplexy and a painless death. So passed away a
noble, manlu, great hearted and honorable man, beloved most by those who knew
him best. The funeral services were held from his beautiful home in
Plainfield, on Thursday afternoon, and the remains were placed in the
Plainfield cemetery.
