John R. was born in Eastern Kentucky, July 15, 1802; his father died when he was small, and his mother afterward married Phillip Ward and moved to Ohio. John R. April 15, 1824, he was married in Steubenville, Ohio, where he remained ten or twelve years, and then removed to Carrolton, Carroll Co., Ohio. He subsequently lived in a farm in the northern part of Williams county about five years, and then with his family located in St. Joseph, Mo., later settling about 60 miles south of that place. In the latter part of the year 1854 he went to Kickapoo, where he followed millwriting, and from there went with a party to Pike's Peak, where he was supposed to have been killed, as he has never since been heard from. He was a member of the Methodist Episcoplal Church. His wife, who was a daughter of Jacob Welday, of Pennsylvania, was born in Ohio, March 12, 1807, and still survives. Cassil received a good common-school education, and subsequently taught school twenty-two terms. He learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed quite extensively, and since locating in Missouri has erected several buildings and one school house. He went to Missouri from Ohio in 1874, and settled on his present farm of 160 acres in Linn Township, upon which he erected good buildings and made improvements. September 22, 1856, he married Louisa Partee, who was born in Defiance County, Ohio, November 1, 1835, and is a daughter of Lawrence and Rebecca (Webb) Partee.
