Biography: "...Joshua Black, son of Christopher and grandfather of George H., was born Oct 3, 1788, in Howard County, Maryland, and was a soldier in the war of 1813. By trade he was a carpenter. He removed with his family in 1826 to Marion County, Indiana, settling in Indianapolis, where for years he was engaged in building , erecting many structures of the day including the old Roberts Chapel, on the southwest corner of Meridian street and the Circle. Later he entered a tract in Irvington, whre he lifed for a time, but returned to the city and died there Nov. 4, 1879, at the age of ninety-one years and one month. He was a member of the Methodist Church, inwhich he was class leader. In politics he was an old-line Whig, serving as a member of city council. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity.
