John KING
John King came over on the sailing vessel George Washington. Elder Orson Pratt had made a prophecy that if the saints would be humble and faithful in ovservance of their prayers the ship would make the fastest trip across the Atlantic of any ship carrying a company of Latter-Day Saints. The ship made the crossing in 21 days and arrived in Boston Harbor on April 17. John King and William Hymas walked west. Worked for a farmer for 2 mos. then walked to Iowa took ill and was 2 years there. Then John walked to Nebraska and joined the Horace - Haight Church Train Company. They left on May 1859 and arrived in Salt Lake City 1 Sep 1859. 'He loved America and never had a desire to return to his homeland, but in the fall of 1889 he was called to fill a mission to Great Britian. He was an eager and willing missionary but, illness forced him to return home. He had developed an asthma and was told by doctors that he would surely die if he didn't leave England. His health did improve after his return but he regretted his inability to complete the mission.

He married Elizabeth Griffin 1 Nov 1868 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah . Elizabeth Griffin was born at Aldridge Staffordshire, Sussex, England 7 Feb 1851 daughter of Henry Griffin and Maria Allen .
