Excerpts from History of Jakob Tobler by Cecilia Ence Tobler

In a beautiful village in Switzerland named Schoengrund in the County of Appenzel lived a family whose father's name was Christian Tobler and the mother Anna Buhler. Fifteen children were born to this family. Seven girls and eight boys, Jakob born 15 Jan 1833, who is the hero of this history. He grew up with the companionship of his brothers and sisters, and developed the peaceful disposition he was credited with. He loved his parents and brothers and sisters.

It was necessary, as each child reached the age of twelve (this was factory labor age) to go to the factory. Jakob became a weaver of cloth, and did this kind of labor to help his parents provide for the family. When he reached the age of eighteen, it was the rule for the boys to be drafted into the armed forces.

When Jakob was examined, they found he had flat feet which would be a handicap in marching, as a soldier must do. They discovered Jakob's musical talent and used him as one of their drummers while he was in the army. He was stationed in another for this training perhaps it was during this training that he became acquainted with a girl by the name of Anna Katherina Presisig, she was from Schwellbrum, they were married on the 16 May 1854. No children were born to this union, they joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and were on their way to Zion in the year 1861.

While at Florence, Nebraska, they remained for a few days to rest to get some much needed rest. One evening after this good sister had helped prepare the evening meal, she was weary and sent into the tent where they were to sleep for the night.

When Jakob went in, to his great surprise and terror he found his good wife had passed away. A great sorrow filled his soul, we can all imagine his great sorrow. No other relative, and so far from home, but he was among friends. They were all so sympathetic and kind and a helped in every way they could to comfort and sustain him. Barbara Staheli, a young convert from Amerswill Switzerland, became acquianted with Jakob and Anna Katherina at Liverpool England, she was very kind and helpful to Jakob through the trying journey to Salt Lake City.

(Note from Fenton Whitney, a grandson in-law of Jakob)
Ever since I read of Aunt Anna Katherina's death at Florence I have had a feeling of responsibility, toward her, I wonder what has been done to show her our love and appreciation, for her sacrifice for the Gospel. (I mean all of us of the tribe of Jakob and Anna Katherina.)
I see by the family group sheet that we don't even know who her father and mother are, or had any of her ancestors work done.
As I understand the prophet in the Book of Mormon talking about a Book of Remembrance, that we all have a duty to such as Anna Katherina. If she would of lived she would of been accountable for her ancestors, as it is I think we are.
