Birthdate calculated from death certificate. Age at death 50 years 3 months, January 26, 1875.

Uncle Harry and Uncle Joe told Diana on August 30, 1968 that the Johnston's came from Tiperary and Tyrone counties in Ireland.

Richard Wilbur Johnston said that his great grandfather James William drove a hack in Dublin, Ireland.
He also said that the Johnston Clan originated in Scotland but was driven out, because they were "nasty". They left Ireland during the potato famine.

Family Folklore??? The Johnston line started with Lord Baltimore in about 1600. It is claimed that they came over with him on the same ship. (Tighlman line???) From Uncle Harry and Uncle Joe to Aunt Diana on August 30, 1968

Harry Bryan remembers visiting Baltimore for about 10 months, around 1900, as a very young child and meeting the family. Aunt Sealey (Cecelia), Aunt Molly (Ann?? or another), Uncle Phil Hammond (Harry Broomfield's Mother's brother), Harry Broomfield's brother David, and sisters Sade (Sarah?), and Jane (Hannah Jane).

According to Harry Bryan, Harry Broomfield's grandfather Johnston was born in Tipperary County, Ireland and his mother's parents (Hammonds) came from Tyrone County, Ireland. (This is in conflict with James William's death certificate which says he was born in Tyrone County.)

Probably "Uncle Jim" that Harry refers to.

Shown in the 1880 Census, age 34, born in Ireland, parents born in Ireland. Wife Essy? (hard to read) also shown born in Ireland. Also Three sons ages 5,3,1, names difficult to read, born in Maryland, parents both born in Ireland.

According to Harry Bryan, "Uncle Jim" died when Harry Broomfield was about 30. There is some question about who this Uncle Jim is. Is it Harry Broomfield's brother, or Uncle?? There is an Uncle James and a brother David James.

-Gravestone of David Charles Johnston reads: "son of Mary Ann and the late James William Johnston"
-David Charles Johnston was married by a Methodist minister to Hannah Catherine Hammond, whose parents were also married by a Methodist minister, and whose father was born in Ireland (but emigrated in 1833.

Methodism in Ireland apparently "arrived" in Ireland in the 1740's. The Methodist Church in Ireland was established as a separate denomination in 1878. It had originally been an evangelistic movement within the Established Church. However, the ordination of its own ministers and the increasing disassociation many Mathodists felt from the Anglican Church, meant that separation was inevitable." see www.irishmethodist.org/intro.htm

Uncle Harry and Uncle Joe told Diana on August 30, 1968 that David Charles was quite a mathematician and that Grandfather Johnston was also an English and Math Whiz. (Harry Broomfield)

According to Harry Bryan, David had the largest coppersmith shop in Baltimore. He also invented a kind of mantle for the street lights of baltimore.

When David died, Harry sold the coppersmith business for about $25,000 then went to San Francisco and back to Baltimore. He then went to Colorado where he taught dancing at Cripple Creek and on to Salt Lake in about 1894.
