Ellen Doubek wrote, 28 Feb 1981: "Finally we have documentation that ties our Joseph K. Nettles in with the Camden Nettles. I felt very certain that he was the son of Capt. William and Mary Mathis - but Mr. Boykin has located a deed that shows that our Joseph and Abigail "of Jackson County, Tenn." sold property which had been owned by Abigail in Kershaw County, S.C."

"Joseph K. Nettles is believed to have been born June 3, 1778, the date which was entered in the Bible of his brother, William, Jr. The birth date for Joseph K. was given as 1771 in the Bible belonging to his daughter-in-law, (Sally Darwin Nettles), but this is considered to be an error since it does on agree with the age he gave on the Jackson Co., TN Census in 1820. The family lived in South Carolina at the time of his birth, near Camden in an area which was then called "Sumter District" but later the area became part of Kershaw County." --Kith and Kin, by Ellen Doubek.
