The records of this Thomas and his uncle of the same name who was only ten years his senior are very vague for a very good reason as one of them was indicted for manslaughter in 1629 but was released due to the efforts of kinspeople. This same man was again indicted for a felony in 1631 so his family had him sent to a "distant Place." It seems that the uncle was on the Continent serving in the Thirty Years War at that time. About 1637 at the instigation of his uncle, Sir John PETTUS, who as a member of London Co., and held the third charter of VA., he (the Uncle Thomas) was sent to the Virginia Colony in command of forty men who were to assist in their struggles with the Indians. The whereabouts of Thomas, the nephew, between 1631 and his arrival in Va. in 1643 as headright of Col. PETTUS is unknown. Although it can not be proved with certainty, it seems that it was teh nephew who was sent to "distant places" as eldest sons of eldest sons were not subjected to such fate except in dire circumstatnces. Thomas Petty who arrived in VA. in 1643 obtained lands in Rappahannock Co., VA.
