       Mary Ann Barge the eldest child of James and Amelia was born 27 July 1840 in Northampton. She came to Canada with her parents and siblings about 1850. She married William John Hemsley 7 Aug 1860. Mary Ann and John had two girls, but John died about 1862 leaving Mary Ann with one daughter and a second on the way. When Emily was born, she was adopted by a Mitchell village family named Plum. The Plums subsequently moved to the United States. Mary Ann's first daughter Alma Mary was fostered to different families while her mother worked as a seamstress, nurse, and teacher. In 1875, Mary took her daughter to Toronto. Mary Ann worked at the Toronto Hospital and her daughter soon followed suit. Mary Ann married John Beck about 1900. She was in charge of a day care centre (called a creche at that time). Mary Ann died 21 Oct. 1921 and is buried in St. John's Norway Cemetery with her daughter and some of Alma Mary's children.
