Dear Fran,Martha Chambless/Cha,bliss Peebles, the wife of Jesse Peebles of Albemarle Parish, Sussex County, Virginia, was indeed the daughter of John Chambless/iss, Sr. and wife, Elizabeth Taylor born,Bristol Parish, pRINCE gEORGE cOUNTY, Virginia. By 1746 was in Surry County, aLBEMARLE parish, where she was a sponsor AT the christening of a child. Assume she married Jesse Peebles in Albemarle Parish, either Surry orSussex County. Sussex formed in 1754 from Surry. Her mother's mother was Elizabeth Jones Chappell Taylor, dau. of James Jones, 1st wife of Thomas Chappell, 3rd who d. Prince George County, ca. 1702. left a will which is mentioned in other documents, butis one of the lost records of that ravaged County. She married 2nd, Thomas Taylor aplanter of Prince George and Surry Counties, Virginia. died Surry county, 1746, left Will.Tje Brothers of Martha Chambless/iss Peebles were: 1. John Chambless, Jr. who went to South Carolina, b. ca. 1728,d. 1802. 2. Christopher Chambless, b. ca. 1730, d. 1775, South Carolina, 3. William Chambless/iss, Sr. b. ca. 1732, d. 1804, Sussex County, Virginia,4. Henry Chambless/iss, b. 1734, d.1797. of Brunswick and Greensville Counties, V a.; 5. Martha Chambless/iss, m. I need to check the other Sumter County, Georgia Census records to see if Jesse Chambless is always born in North Carolina. Joel Chambless of Granville County, NorthCarolina also bought land in Jones county, Georgia, (I have the deed) His son Robert was one ofthe witnesses. Wondering if perhaps Jesse Chambless was a son of Robert Chambless, son of Joel?Lettus see. Joel married Mary Bailey in 1777, Nope. Not enough time. But, there were severalother Chambless Men in North Carolina who were of the right age to be Jesses father.The information I have on James Chambless of Jones County, Georgia given at the end of this.He died fairly young. Think he was a son of William Chambless and Martha Robertson or of William and 2nd wife. In 1850, Jesse Chambles was age 57; John chambless was 31, William chambless was 26, and Andrew Chambless was 28. John and William Chambless lived very near each other; Andrew was fairly near them, while Jesse was quite a distance away from the other three, all of whom could have been his sons.Sumpter County, Georgia, 3 Jan. 1856, Jesse L. They were living withJesse, Sr and wife Nancy in the 1860 Census, which shows that Jesse, the Younger, was in that yearage 30, or b. ca. 1830.I havent read any of the Census records for Sumter County, Georgia, but fullyintend to do so, especially the 1840/50/70 and 80 in order to see whether Jesse Sr. s place of birth is always North Carolina. Of the men living in Sumter County, Georgia when Jesse Chambless, Sr. did, only two can be positively identified as his sons. They are William, b. ca. 1822 and Jesse, b. ca. 1830.Jesse Chambless the elder died in Sumter County, Georgia in 1878, leaving a will dated 31 Dec. 1874,probated 7 Oct. 1878, Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, WB A (00), p. 199-200.
