NAME: Peeples or Peebles RESEARCH NOTE: There is an Elizabeth Peebles, born 23 Dec 1773 in Northampton, NC, who was the daughter of Jesse Peebles and Martha Chambless. Further research necessary. Genforum notes on Jesse Peebles family included in notes. Dear Fran,Martha Chambless/Cha,bliss Peebles, the wife of Jesse Peebles of Albemarle Parish, Sussex County, Virginia, was indeed the daughter of John Chambless/iss, Sr. and wife, Elizabeth Taylor born,Bristol Parish, pRINCE gEORGE cOUNTY, Virginia. By 1746 was in Surry County, aLBEMARLE parish, where she was a sponsor AT the christening of a child. Assume she married Jesse Peebles in Albemarle Parish, either Surry orSussex County. Sussex formed in 1754 from Surry. Her mother's mother was Elizabeth Jones Chappell Taylor, dau. of James Jones, 1st wife of Thomas Chappell, 3rd who d. Prince George County, ca. 1702. left a will which is mentioned in other documents, butis one of the lost records of that ravaged County. She married 2nd, Thomas Taylor aplanter of Prince George and Surry Counties, Virginia. died Surry county, 1746, left Will.Tje Brothers of Martha Chambless/iss Peebles were: 1. John Chambless, Jr. who went to South Carolina, b. ca. 1728,d. 1802. 2. Christopher Chambless, b. ca. 1730, d. 1775, South Carolina, 3. William Chambless/iss, Sr. b. ca. 1732, d. 1804, Sussex County, Virginia,4. Henry Chambless/iss, b. 1734, d.1797. of Brunswick and Greensville Counties, V a.; 5. Martha Chambless/iss, m. Jesse Peebles, and 6. James Chambless/iss, b/ 1744,d. Sussex County, Va. 1810. Hope this is of some help. Sincerely, Mary M. Chambless, 30+ years, Chambles/Chambliss research. Jesse Chambless in Jones County, Georgia Census, b. 1793, N. C., d. Sumter County, Ga. 1878.Jones County, Georgia, D. B. P p. 415-10 March 1836, Jesse Chambless to Drury Hodge a tractof land in Jones County, Georgia. I need to check the other Sumter County, Georgia Census records to see if Jesse Chambless is always born in North Carolina. Joel Chambless of Granville County, NorthCarolina also bought land in Jones county, Georgia, (I have the deed) His son Robert was one ofthe witnesses. Wondering if perhaps Jesse Chambless was a son of Robert Chambless, son of Joel?Lettus see. Joel married Mary Bailey in 1777, Nope. Not enough time. But, there were severalother Chambless Men in North Carolina who were of the right age to be Jesses father. The information I have on James Chambless of Jones County, Georgia given at the end of this.He died fairly young. Think he was a son of William Chambless and Martha Robertson or of William and 2nd wife. In 1850, Jesse Chambles was age 57; John chambless was 31, William chambless was 26, and Andrew Chambless was 28. John and William Chambless lived very near each other; Andrew was fairly near them, while Jesse was quite a distance away from the other three, all of whom could have been his sons.Sumpter County, Georgia, 3 Jan. 1856, Jesse L. (or C.) Chambless, son of Jesse, Sr. m. Matilda,Daughter of William Gammage of Americus, Sumter County, Georgia. They were living withJesse, Sr and wife Nancy in the 1860 Census, which shows that Jesse, the Younger, was in that yearage 30, or b. ca. 1830.I havent read any of the Census records for Sumter County, Georgia, but fullyintend to do so, especially the 1840/50/70 and 80 in order to see whether Jesse Sr. s place of birth is always North Carolina. Of the men living in Sumter County, Georgia when Jesse Chambless, Sr. did, only two can be positively identified as his sons. They are William, b. ca. 1822 and Jesse, b. ca. 1830.Jesse Chambless the elder died in Sumter County, Georgia in 1878, leaving a will dated 31 Dec. 1874,probated 7 Oct. 1878, Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, WB A (00), p. 199-200. Jesses firstwife, Nancy had obviously died and he had remarried because his will ( abstract of same) is as follows:Will of Jesse Chambless, Sr.To my wife, Eliza A. chambless, land, notes, Money, cattle, hogs, sheep, farm improvements &c.Should she remarry, everything to my Youngest son, Jesse C (or L) Chambless.signed Jesse (X) ChamblessNo witnesses given in abstract I have. The Will of William Chambless, Sr., son of Jesse, Sr. and 1st wife Nancy, b. 1822, Jones County, Georgia, died Sumter County, Georgia, 1901. Will dated 9 August 1901, recorded in W.B. B, p. 115,Sumpter County, Georgia. (Abstract Folows):To wife, Eliza Chambless----To daughter, Nannieto daughter Malissa ParkerTo son Joe ChamblessTo son William ChamblessTo son Jesse ChamblessTo son Needham J. ChamblessTo son-in-law, John Howell. The 1860 Census of Sumter County, Georgia shows William Chambless with the following ChildrenI dont know who copied this census record, but its sure not done right.William Chambless, age 36, wife, Eliza, age 36, son Joseph, age 17, Son William, age 14, dau.Melissa, age 12, son Jesse, age 8, Nancy Ann, age not written here, Needham J., age not writtenand Purifoy L. age not given and must have died in youth. Not named in Fathers will.Jesse, age 8 in 1860 , age 28 in 1880, must be the father of Jesse Chambless of Sumter County,Georgia, age 81, who says his father was born in 1863 ?, but if son of William of the Will, d. 1901,then b. 1852/53, not 1863, and William born 1824, not 1822. . .that is according to informationgiven on censuses read thus far. This is not necessarily true, Mary. Jesse and Matilda GammageChamblesses children might be the right ones, t oo. Would be ionteresting to know whether JesseG. Chambless of Americus, Sumter County, Georgia of the 1976 ketterm aged 81, had brothersMilton and Wilie and sister Beulah and Edna and whether or not his Mothers name was Julia?See all Chambleses, found Sumter County, Georgia, 1880 Soundex Indes to Census, only. There are probably others to be found on the regular Census MF. Need to read 1840 thru1880Other Chambless Records, Sumter County, Georgia.Book N, page 626 1 March 1860For the natural love and affection I bear unto my children, vizt: Nancy, Ann, Elizabeth, Wiley,Drury, Isaiah, Granburg, and David Chambless, a lot in the town of Americus on the Southside of Hill on Church Street at the corner of Hills Field, one-half acre and improvements. . .Also, a lot in Americus on the West side of Town Creek, on the Northwest Corner of the lotknown as the Sullivan Lot 2-A.signed Wiley ChamblessBook Q. p. 32213 Jan. 1868A. Rather than Nancy, Ann, Elizabeth,Wiley &c.Somewhere in this pile of Georgia records I have a marriage between Wiley Chambless andCasey Youman, Sumter County, Ga. Date forgotten.More Records, Chambless, Sumter County, Georgia.Talbot County, Georgia, Recorded in Sumter County, Georgia. No Book, page, date givenon this Ladson Abstract: For Divers goods and consideration do make and appoint George M. William Henry b. 1824 and Andrew D.Chambless born 1822. I may have other Sumter county, records, but I cant recall any of them. Both boys, according to Chambless Chronicles, married daughters of John Pye. . .or one m. adaughter, the other m. the widow of a son, and their sister Sarah Ann Chambless also m. a Pye.I know Ive brought neither of us any closer to the parentage of Jesse Chambless of Jones and Sumter Counties, Georgia, but hoped just putting it all down might make me see something Ive missed. The one puzzle really is that he was born in North Carolina in 1793.
