NOTE: Robert Hancock is the "proposed" father of Sarah Ann. More research is needed. Sarah Ann Hancock is the daughter of Hancock. She was born on 16 Feb 1827 in Virginia. Census on 01 Aug 1850 in Halifax county, NC family #306: S A Hancock, female, age 20 living with a Henry Hancock, 34 and others, including a C. A. Hancock, female 22 who could be Caroline Amanda.. She died on 01 Feb 1877 in North Carolina, USA. She was also known as Sallie Ann Hancock. Burial in Old Connoconnara Church Cemetery, Halifax Co., NC. Notes for Sarah Ann Hancock: General Notes: On the Halifax county, North Carolina 1850 census family #305 is the family of Joseph Barkley and wife, Levenia with their 8 children which includes Charlton Rhodes Barkley, my great great grandfather who was killed in the Civil War. Charlton had married Sarah Ann(Sallie) Hancock before the War. The family next door to the Barkley family is Henry Handcock, age 34. It includes Martha, 35 and Mary 11. It also includes a G. L. Handcock who is 11 years old. I'm thinking that this is George L. Hancock in later census data. It includes a nine year old W. "I" Handcock that could be William H. Hancock who is on the 1860 census living with Caroline Hancock Futrell and her family in Halifax county. On the 1850 census there is a C. A. Handcock, female who is 22 and a S. A. Handcock who is 20. I think C. A. is Caroline Amanda and S. A. is Sarah Ann Hancock. On the 1860 census with Caroline Futrell is Nancy Gay. I believe Nancy to be Nancy Hancock who married George Gay in Virginia. All three females claim to have been born in Virginia. I think it very important and telling that the Handcock family is living beside the Barkley family that indeed, S. A. Handcock is my great, great grandmother, Sarah Ann Hancock Barkley. The families stay intertwined through the census data with the Barkley children, John Lacy, W. E. and Florence Barkley living with Nancy Gay's daughter, Indiana Gay Garibaldi in the 1880 census. This census was taken after the death of Sarah Ann Hancock Barkley who passed away in 1877. I do not believe that Henry Handcock age 34 is their father. He is too young for that. But, he could be their brother. More research is needed and I am pursuing that to prove that the three girls, Caroline, Sarah Ann and Nancy are indeed sisters. ESTATE RECORDS IN THE DEED BOOKS OF NASH CO. NC 1781-1897 by Jos. W. --------Deborah Gammon's Notes--------- He was born Abt. 08 Nov 1857. Census on 22 Jun 1880 in Halifax Township, Halifax Co., NC living with A. Garriboldi, working as a servant. Occupation 1910 (Salesman in Retail). He died on 28 Mar 1920 in Halifax, North Carolina, USA [46]. Burial on 29 Mar 1920 in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Cause Of Death was Influenza. Notes for Charlton Rhodes Barkley II: General Notes: On the June 12, 1880 NC Census for Griffins Township in Nash County, page 393, there is a Chas. R. Barkley, age 22 working as a laborer for Fletcher B. Ricks and his wife. On the June 22, 1880 NC Census for Halifax Township, Halifax County, page 492, there is a Charlton Barkley, age 18 working as a servant with his sister, Florence Barkley, for A. Garriboldi. Is this the same person? The only reason I ask that is my Aunt Elsie Lilley, in a conversation in June, 2001, told me that her grandfather, John Lacy Barkley was raised by Capt. Garriboldi because his father had died in Civil War and mother died(1877) in his youth as well. Or, perhaps, this "Charlton" is John Lacy and a neighbor reported the findings to the census taker incorrectly? --------End Deborah Gammon's Notes---------
