"CLIFTON "FERDIE" BARKLEY ENFIELD - Mr. Clifton Ferdie Barkley Sr., died Thursday, November 13, 1997 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. Beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Father-in-law and a friend to many. Long term resident of Enfield, North Carolina was born to thelate Clifton Ferguson Barkley and Pearl Braswell Barkley. A graduate of Enfield High School and college graduate of Davey Institute of Science Technology in Kent, Ohio. A World War II Army veteran who served hi s country well during his tour of duty in the South Pacific in New Guinea and Australia. After returning from his tour of duty in 1946 hebegan farming in Waverly, Virginia. Later returning back to Enfield in 1950 where he continued to farm until his retirement in 1979. He received numerous awards and recognition's for his creativity in farmingand in the advancement of agriculture from the Certified Seed Program, North Carolina State University Agriculture division and Halifax County. A member of the VFW and American Legion he continued to enjoy the camaderie of fellow foreign war veterans. He enjoyed various community services in Enfield with a special interest in the Meals on WheelsProgram. Ferdie, also was a lifetime member of his beloved Enfield Baptist Church where he serve as a deacon and a member of the choir. Hischurch involvement and the varied roles that he served in, were proudachievements during his life. Surviving are his loving family, wife Maebelle Bissette Barkley; son, Clifton Ferdie Barkley Jr. and daughter-in-law Barbara Barkley of Raleigh; daughter, Silva Barkley Elko and son-in-law Frank Elko of Petersburg Va.; his pride and joy, three loving granddaughters, Natalie Barkley, Heather Elko and Amanda Elko; and loving sisters and brother, Gwen Wilson of Wilson, Vera Felton of Kinston, Marion Luper of Rocky Mount and Victor Barkley of Falls City Texas. The family will receive friends at the Enfield Baptist Church on Satur- day November the 15th from 7-8:30 P.M. Funeral service will be held Sunday, November the 16th at the Enfield Baptist Church at 2 p.m. by the Rev. David Phillips. Burial will follow with graveside servicesat the Bailey, North Carolina cemetery. A Clifton Ferdie Barkley Sr. Memorial fund has been created and donations can be made in celebration of his life to support the Enfield Baptist Church Building Fund. Funeral arrangements are by the Shingleton Funeral Home of Wilson, NorthCarolina."
