He was born on 26 Jan 1840 in Northampton Co. NC. Military Service on 10 Sep 1861 (Civil War, Co. I, 30th Inf Reg NC Promoted to Full Corpl on June 1, 1863). Census on 21 Jun 1880 in Toisnot Twp, Wilson co., NC family #396: Jas H. Barkley 40, sons, Freddie 7, John 5, Herbert 1 and Ethelinda Jolly age 46, housekeeper.. He married Nancy Ann Edwards. They were married on 04 Apr 1883 in Marriage performed by B. C. Pitt, Primitive Baptist Minister at Britton Edwards Home. Residence 1910 in Rocky Mount Rd., Wilson, NC. He died on 22 May 1921 in Wilson county, NC [24]. Burial in Moore family cemetery, Town Creek area, Wilson Co., NC (Barkley).
