                       As a child, Virgil and his family moved from Oklahoma to Texas panhandle to be near relatives of Grandpa Raney (Grandma Maxine Lee Raney has lots of cousins down there.)  Their mode of transportation was a horse-drawn buckboard.  On the way, all of the kids (4 or 5 boys and one girl) and his dad got sick, so his mom drove the wagon

Later in life he lived in Alberquerqe, where Maxine Lee Raney knew him.
When 18 he left Texas with a friend, bound for California (Pasadena?) to seek their fortunes.
Virgil's dad was Irish.
