Notes from: http://jnjwest.familytreeguide.com/getperson.php?personID=I28283&tree=T1&PHPSESSID=fe600ce The county court records show that On October 5, 1840 John L. Freeman, age 13, and Sarah Freeman, age 11, were bound to Paskell Whitlow until age 21. These were children of William P. Freeman. On the same date as above, Isaac Thornton, Paskell's father-in-law, was made the guardian of the minor heirs of said William P. Freeman. The children were: Benjamin R., William A., John L., James; Sarah, Adeline, and Elizabeth Freeman. On July 3, 1843, Paskell was released from any further liability on his indenture bond for John L. Freeman who had run away. The county records only give glimpses of Paskell. His wife, Matilda, was an heir to 1/8 ? of the estate of her father Isaac Thornton. Paskell proceeded to help James Hamilton, the Sheriff of Hardin County, to obtain the Thornton property. In 1855 Paskell's oldest son, Joshua, age 18, was murdered by James Clifton. An inquest was held and found that Joshua Whitlow died on or about the 7th of March 1855 as a result of being stabbed with a knife by James Clifton. Joshua was probably buried on the Hardins Creek farm perhaps near where the present highway 128 crosses said creek. A grave stone with the mane Whitlow carved on it was found in that area by Dr. Otis Whiltow on his rounds in that area sometime in the first half of this century. The stone was being used as a door step at one of the Laden houses. The stone was reported to have been covered in a road fill when Highway 128 was built in 1956.A second account of the death of Joshua Whitlow was also given by Ann McDonald of Shawnee Oklahoma, in her history of the Paskell Whitlow family written in 1979. Ann's account of the death of Joshua was handed down through family tradition. She was not aware of the court records in Hardin County, in fact did not know that Her Whitlow family came from Hardin County until we made contact in the mid 1970's. By her permission, A transcription of Ann's family history follows. Some passages my have been altered to keep from duplicating material in our respective articles.
