      From Ancestry.com comes the story of Samuel's adoption.  Samuel's mother died giving birth to him.  William and Elizabeth Shotwell had their own child who died after child birth, just a month after Samuel was born.  They adopted Samuel.  At that time it was not unusual to let another family adopt your child if there was no mother to take care of it.  The Hutchins and Shotwell families were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers).
