Story of Francis (Frank) Radel Francis Radel was born Feb. 25, 1839 at Kaeethard, Baden, Germany. His father was George Radel. His mother was Louisa L. Heneka. He belonged to the Catholic Church. He was a short man, a baker by trade. He wouldn't let the children eat bread until it was a day old, Said hot bread was too hard to digest. He had a brother Joseph and a sister who came to the USA after he came. He was living in Kansas at the age of 20 and is believed to have lived there about 3 years. (The following information is taken from Civil War record.) He enrilled in the army 25 Oct 1861, at the age of 22 at Boonville, New York, as a private. He served with the Company H 97th New York Infantry and saw action at the Battle of Bull Run. Prisoner of War Records show him captured at Manacass Virginia, Aug. 30 1862. Paroled at Centerville Sept. 3, 1862 sighted at Camp Parole Maryland date not stated. Sent to Alexandria, Virginia, Nov.1862 and to Acquia Creek Dec. 14 or 15 1862. No evidence of medical treatment on records, He was honorably discharged at Ceder Mt., Virginia Jan3, 1864 and mustered out with his company July 18, 1865, in the field at Balls Crop Roads, Virginia. After leaving the service he has resided in New York, Missouri, and Nebraska. He married Anna Jane Law May 13, 1877 at Stanberry, Gentry, Missouri. By Esq. Buttler. They had six children: George, Clara, Lizzie, Joseph, Rosena, and Frank Edward. He made two trips to Edaho to visit Clara Ellen Radel Funk in Burley, Idaho. In later years he suffered rheumatism in both arms and knees, a condition he claimed he contracted near Culpepper, Virginia, about June 15 1863 while in the service. When he died Clara said the Catholics tried to get into the house but Anna Jane wouldn't let them in. He died Oct. 14 1918 at the age of 79, at Wallace, Lincoln, Nebraska, and was buried Oct 16 1918 in the Morning View Cemetery.
