1830 Census Georgia, Gwinnett County. John Sr. has quite a few slaves which are in these age catagories: 4 males under 5, 1 female under 5; ( b. 1825 - 1830) 3 males 5 - 10, 1 female 5-10; ( b. 1820 - 1825 ) 1 male 15 -20, 1 female 15 -20. ( b. 1810 - 1815) Since slaves were considered personal property do we do temple work for them? SOURCE: The Heritage of Calhoun County, Alabama, published by Calhoun County. FHL Book # 976.63 H2h - "Benton County was established by the Alabama Legislature December 18, 1832. This county was first named Benton in honor of Thomas Benton. He was senator for the state of Missouri for twelve years. When the Senator's attitude toward the South alienated most Southerners, the name of this county was changed to Calhoun County in 1858, in honor of John C. Calhoun, Senator from South Carolina. Most of the County was Indian lands and not many settlers, but in January, 1834, the President of the United States issued a proclamation for the sale of public lands in all this territory of Alabama. The proclamation stirred the whole country to action. Settlers poured into the area. Land speculators moved quickly. The land tract records in the Alabama Room at the public library show the recordings of these land tranations. JOHN CHANDLER was one of the Revolutionary soldiers that were in Benton County around this time. NOTE: In August, 1839, there was a great drought throughout Alabama and the entire south, beginning avout the 1st of August, 1829 and continuing until January of 1840. Born in Loudon Co., VA in 1846. Moved to South Carolina and began a family. Obituary from the Jacksonville (Alabama) Republican reads that John Chandler, better known as "Grandsire Chandler" died near that place on the 19th Ult., aged 104. The family lived in South Carolina during the War. Served in the Revolutionary War for seven years as a private in Capt. John Lyle's company, and under Generals Greene and Sumter. Fought at the battles of 'Stono, Ramsour's Mills, Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock and Fishing Creek, Eutaw, Camden and Cowpens, and other skirmishes with the Tories'. (Source: Greenville Mountaineer, Greenville, SC, March 29, 1850) John Chandler was placed on the pension roll, 1832, of Gwinnett County, Ga.. Better known as 'Grandsire Chandler' ( Sources: The Alabama Historical Quarterly, Winter Issue 1944, reprinted by Willo Publishing Co., 1960). His father was named John CHANDLER, referred to as "Grandsire Chandler". His wife, Ritah BONDS, was born in 1758 in South Carolina. By 1820, they were married, had their first child, and were living in Georgia. The 1830 Census shows them in Carroll County, Georgia. In 1840, they had moved across the state line to Alabama and were living in Benton County (later to be renamed Calhoun Co.). By 1850, they had moved on to Arkansas and can located in Mine Creek Township of Hempstead County. The 1860 Census shows them living in Nathan, Pike County, Arkansas. Grace Chandler Hairston writes that her Grandfather "Joel left Piedmont, Calhoun Co. Alabama in 1845, with his wife, 14 children and two slaves" Oral history has it that he served in the Rev. War in South Carolina. I was able to find several John Chandlers from Virginia that served in SC. Haven't been able to discern which he is. Also, oral history has it that he lived his later life in Alabama with a daughter and lived to be 104. In the DAR Patriot Index - Centennial Edition part 1: "CHANDLER, John b. abt. 1755 in Virginia. 1825 - Alabama Land purchase 3 Nov 1825 - A John Chandler purchases 80 acres in Huntsville, Alabama with cash. Serial Patent # 61-88-0036 Document # 1953 (1 E 1/2 S. Huntsville No. 2S 7 W Section 24) This seems to be the brother of Joel Chandler who also purchases land in Huntsville in 1822. Also John's son Hampton buys land in Huntsville in 1837 in section 17 and section 7. NOTES: Childrens' names were not included in family files. Names come from NFS.

They crossed the Mississippi on the morning of January 1st 1846, and came on to what is now Nathan, Pike County, Arkansas". 1850 Census Arkansas, Hempstead County, Mine Creek Township. In this Census in addition to his children is a girl Angaline W. Leay, age 17, female. Birthplace: Tennessee. What relation is she? A slave? 1860 Census Arkansas, Hempstead County, Mine Creek Township, Nashville Post office. In addition to his children (14) there is also listed the following indivuals: Sarah A. Chandle, age 38, who was born in Georgia. Irena Chandle, age 16, who was born in Alabama. Wm. B. Chandle, age 15, who was born in Arkansas Willis Chandle, age 10, who was born in Arkansas Ritter Chandle age 9, who was born in Arkansas Polly Chandle, age 8, who was born in Arkansas Edward P. Chandle, age 4, who was born in Arkansas John J. Chandle, age 2, who was born in Arkansas Risich Chandle, age 1 month who was born in Arkansas Are these slave children? Later Census may sort them out.
