FHL Book # 976.63 H2h - "Benton County was established by the Alabama Legislature December 18, 1832. This county was first named Benton in honor of Thomas Benton. He was senator for the state of Missouri for twelve years. When the Senator's attitude toward the South alienated most Southerners, the name of this county was changed to Calhoun County in 1858, in honor of John C. Calhoun, Senator from South Carolina. Most of the County was Indian lands and not many settlers, but in January, 1834, the President of the United States issued a proclamation for the sale of public lands in all this territory of Alabama. The proclamation stirred the whole country to action. Settlers poured into the area. Land speculators moved quickly. The land tract records in the Alabama Room at the public library show the recordings of these land tranations. JOHN CHANDLER was one of the Revolutionary soldiers that were in Benton County around this time. NOTE: In August, 1839, there was a great drought throughout Alabama and the entire south, beginning avout the 1st of August, 1829 and continuing until January of 1840. Born in Loudon Co., VA in 1846. Moved to South Carolina and began a family. Obituary from the Jacksonville (Alabama) Republican reads that John Chandler, better known as "Grandsire Chandler" died near that place on the 19th Ult., aged 104. The family lived in South Carolina during the War. Served in the Revolutionary War for seven years as a private in Capt. John Lyle's company, and under Generals Greene and Sumter. Fought at the battles of 'Stono, Ramsour's Mills, Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock and Fishing Creek, Eutaw, Camden and Cowpens, and other skirmishes with the Tories'. (Source: Greenville Mountaineer, Greenville, SC, March 29, 1850) John Chandler was placed on the pension roll, 1832, of Gwinnett County, Ga.. Better known as 'Grandsire Chandler' ( Sources: The Alabama Historical Quarterly, Winter Issue 1944, reprinted by Willo Publishing Co., 1960). According to the above sources, he died on either the 10th or 19th of March, 1850. Source: AlGenWeb: County Index: Calhoun County CHANDLER AND BONDS: Joel CHANDLER was born in 1800 in South Carolina. His father was named John CHANDLER, referred to as "Grandsire Chandler". His wife, Ritah BONDS, was born in 1758 in South Carolina. By 1820, they were married, had their first child, and were living in Georgia. The 1830 Census shows them in Carroll County, Georgia. In 1840, they had moved across the state line to Alabama and were living in Benton County (later to be renamed Calhoun Co.). By 1850, they had moved on to Arkansas and can located in Mine Creek Township of Hempstead County. The 1860 Census shows them living in Nathan, Pike County, Arkansas. Grace Chandler Hairston writes that her Grandfather "Joel left Piedmont, Calhoun Co. Alabama in 1845, with his wife, 14 children and two slaves" Oral history has it that he served in the Rev. War in South Carolina. I was able to find several John Chandlers from Virginia that served in SC. Haven't been able to discern which he is. Also, oral history has it that he lived his later life in Alabama with a daughter and lived to be 104. In the DAR Patriot Index - Centennial Edition part 1: "CHANDLER, John b. abt. 1755 in Virginia.
