His wife, Ritah BONDS, was born in 1758 in South Carolina. By 1820, they were married, had their first child, and were living in Georgia. The 1830 Census shows them in Carroll County, Georgia. In 1840, they had moved across the state line to Alabama and were living in Benton County (later to be renamed Calhoun Co.). By 1850, they had moved on to Arkansas and can located in Mine Creek Township of Hempstead County. The 1870 Census shows them living in Nathan, Pike County, Arkansas. Grace Chandler Hairston writes that her Grandfather "Joel left Piedmont, Calhoun Co. They crossed the Mississippi on the morning of January 1st 1846, and came on to what is now Nathan, Pike County, Arkansas". 1850 Census Arkansas, Hempstead County, Mine Creek Township. In this Census in addition to his children is a girl Angaline W. Leay, age 17, female. Birthplace: Tennessee. What relation is she? A slave? 1860 Census Arkansas, Hempstead County, Mine Creek Township, Nashville Post office. In addition to his children (14) there is also listed the following indivuals: Sarah A. Chandle, age 38, who was born in Georgia. Irena Chandle, age 16, who was born in Alabama. Wm. B. Chandle, age 15, who was born in Arkansas Willis Chandle, age 10, who was born in Arkansas Ritter Chandle age 9, who was born in Arkansas Polly Chandle, age 8, who was born in Arkansas Edward P. Chandle, age 4, who was born in Arkansas John J. Chandle, age 2, who was born in Arkansas Risich Chandle, age 1 month who was born in Arkansas Are these slave children? Later Census may sort them out.
