1. Info from Romana Jane Pickrell Smith and Delano Chafa. And also Phyllis Paetzmann.2. In the 1850 census of Elkhart Co, Indiana, records that in the John Pickrell home list besides John, his wife Ruth, a son Samuel, a female, Margaret, age 62, born in Pennsylvania. She was John's mother, as the 1840 census shows her as Margaret Pickrell, head of household, age 50-60, with one male resident, age 15-10.3. Information also from Film # 1697994, Cemeteries of Elkhart County, Indiana, Volume # IV. Page 5. Margaret is listed as 87 years at her death.4. According to Phyllis D. Paetzmann, a Pickrell descendent, Margaret McCoy Pickrell and children went to Elkhart Co., Indiana in 1835. She lived with her son John and his families until her death in 1861.5. According to Don Pickrell of Nova Scotia, Canada, great grand son of Willard Pickrell, son of John and his second wife Catherine Pickrell, that Margaret's father was Daniel McCoy.6. I have two letters which mention a tombstone for Margaret McCoy Pickrell. One was written in the early 1960's and is quoted, "A trip to Elkhart, Indiana to see the old marker and cemetery where Gr-GrGrandmother Margaret McCoy Pickrell is buried. Born: 1783 Died: 1861. This letter is factual, but I sure would like to know the name of the cemetery and have data on other family members buried there. Is there any one in this family who could get the information for us? Perhaps, there are cemetery publications for Elkhart County.7 . Now, if Margaret McCoy Pickrell were born in 1783, she would have been thirty seven years old in 1820. If she were married circa 1810 to Nicholas Pickrell she would have been 27 years old. If she were married circa 1813-1814 she would have been thirty years old. In 1820 there were three children living in the household: two girls and one boy. One of the girls was Catherine Pickrell, my ancestor, who married David Davison in Elkhart County, Indiana. It is my belief that the other female child died before her father Nicholas Pickrell died in 1824. The male child could be John Pickrell but we have his birth date as 1821. I believe that he was born in March 1820 instead of March 1821. We do have a record that there were five children in the family and the estate records of Nicholas Pickrell only mention four.8. IN 1840 Federal Census ID # INS4a205554278, Elkhart Co., IN., page 018. 9. Now, back to the age of Margaret McCoy when she married Nicholas Pickrell. I think that the marriage took place circa 1815-1816 and that a daughter was born circa 1817 and that this daughter died after 1820 and before 1824. Then, Catherine was born in 1819, and John was born in 1820. I think that Margaret McCoy Pickrell was born later than the 1783 date. The 1783 date could be 1788, making her 27 when she married. This is still a late date for a woman to marry. Then, too, Nicholas Pickrell was older than the average age of marriage of a man of the time. 10. The other information pertaining to the tombstone of Margaret McCoy Pickrell come from a quote of a Miss Frances Pickrell, a daughter of Francis Henry Pickrell. Quoting, "My great grandmother was notsatisfied with Ill., and moved to Indiana and bought land near Valparaiso. She is buried near the town, but her tombstone merely states that she was the wife of Nicholas Pickrell." Now, I have trouble withinformation credited to Miss Frances Pickrell. She claimed that Nicholas and Margaret McCoy Pickrell had a daughter Margaret who married a Mr. Warren. There was not verification of documentation which support the statement. Miss Frances Pickrell also refused to accept the fact that there was a Catherine Pickrell who was a daughter of Nicholas and Margaret McCoy Pickrell. This can be verified from several primary documents - the death certificate of Margaret Davison Tompkins and the estate records of Nicholas Pickrell who died in 1824.
